New pavilion not necessary, sillyTo the editor:
I recently visited the new Brochstein Pavilion, and it looks like a good example of environmentally-friendly construction, though I am no expert on green building practices. However, it seems to me that one tenet of eco-friendly design should be limiting construction to those structures which serve some useful function. No matter how small its carbon footprint, the building is just plain unnecessary. We already have the Coffeehouse and I am not sure that plasma televisions are important to the mission of the university, not to mention the costs of air conditioning and lighting. On the other hand, this summer when I am making the arduous 100-yard trek from the Rice Memorial Center to the library, I will have somewhere to rest.
