In the Hot Seat ... Well, sort of
We sent out a list of questions to KTRU's Battle of the Bands contestants. Here's what some of them had to say:
The Boat Show
When did you start playing together?
Chris Lambeth and Alec Walker started playing music together six years ago. They certainly have not been doing so consistently ever since, but they have nonetheless been involved in five musical groups together.
How'd you think of your name?
Chris Lambeth saw some interesting flier that he mistook from across the water for a concert ad. It turned out to be a description of a historic wagon wheel tour. From this came his idea for a band name that inspired in the imagination of an audience a distinct nonmusical theme. Boats were an obvious choice, although it's been surprisingly hard to drop the former bear theme.
What sort of music do you play?
The Boat Show plays technical danceable music. I've heard that what we're really doing is playing post euro country ambient rock-college funk core.
We're into giving the audience a pleasant experience, but we want it to be something that they haven't heard before. Striking the right balance between predictability and challenge has been the goal of our music thus far. Of course, the music has to be fun for us to play, too.
Who plays/does what in the band?
Chris Lambeth plays bass and sings. He's Brohan Bear.
Enrique Luis plays viola. He's retired from a sub.
John George plays trumpet.
Billy Heart plays banjo. He's from the river.
Thomas Brown plays clarinet. He sailed with Cp. Frist in the Adriatic.
Alec Walker plays drums. He's a nerdy Rice guy.
Any upcoming shows anywhere else, or future plans?
Look out for us at Rice's own Brochstein Pavilion (aka Durk's) soon. Also look for us at Super Happy Funland, Alec's Yard, Buddhist Lutheran Underground Garage Skyscraper (BLUGS), Haydon's, and other joints around Houston and by the river.
Got a MySpace or other web site?
No.
If your band had a slogan or motto, what would it be?
"We are the boat show". Suggestions from fans and bears include: Greeeeeeyaarrrrr!; and Beeeeyaaaawwwww!
What's your spirit animal? (one for each band member, or the band as a whole)
Malaysian sun bear. Alec is perhaps a diplomatic gazelle.
Paper or plastic, AND WHY.
Well, I would say plastic cause we're so cheesy, but we all know that the cheesiest cheese is wrapped in waxy paper. So paper.
You can read the responses from the Smoking Section, the Cosmonauts, Mimeogrwath, and Stranger Still in this pdf of page 13 from the printed edition.

Students may need to swipe their Rice IDs through scanners before entering future public parties, said dean of undergraduates Bridget Gorman. This possible policy change is not finalized, but in discussion among student activities and crisis management teams.
