Project Spotlight: Naked for Nourish

By Seong Jong Hong     10/26/11 7:00pm

More than 1 billion people do not have access to clean water, 925 million are malnourished and 22,000 children die every day due to poverty, according to Nourish International's website. However, Rice University Nourish International club plans to change this for the better by fundraising for a summer service project.

Jones College sophomore Victoria Delgado, president of the Rice chapter of Nourish International, explained that Rice Nourish is in its first year, so Naked for Nourish is the club's first major fundraiser. Come Halloween, Rice students will see their peers run naked in Baker 13. However, this year, students can choose who will run on Halloween.

"We created a donation competition within each college to see which participant would raise the most donations; we chose participants from each college who were willing to run the Baker 13 and are well-liked, well-known and visible," Delgado said.

There are currently a total of 25 participants from six colleges, but only the participant who raises the most donations within each college will run Baker 13. This will hopefully create a competitive atmosphere, Delgado said.

Delgado was helped in her efforts to fundraise by Lovett College sophomore Mary Buchanan, Hanszen College freshman Matthew Foer, Jones College sophomore Connor Hoppe and Jones College junior Marc Sabbagh.

Rice Nourish tried to take advantage of Rice's quirky culture by implementing some of the university's traditions into their fundraising ideas, Delgado stated.

Delgado founded this chapter at Rice after visiting a chapter of Nourish International at the University of Texas at Austin. and applying to Nourish International to found a chapter.

Nourish International is an unconventional organization that allows its members to lead service projects that will become self-sustainable so that communities can help themselves. Although Rice Nourish does not yet have a specific project, Naked for Nourish will help with future funding.

Review: “Balloonerism” is a graceful tribute to Mac Miller’s legacy

Mac Miller’s “Balloonerism” is a delicate balancing act — a posthumous release that feels deeply personal yet walks the fine line between honoring an artist's legacy and commodifying it. Unlike other releases from late artists, which can feel like haphazard collections of half-finished demos (The Party Never Ends by Juice WRLD comes to mind), “Balloonerism” is a cohesive, almost ethereal work.

Review: “The Book of Mormon” involves no reading

“The Book of Mormon”, a flashy musical that is not at all biblically accurate, came to the Houston Hobby Center January 7-12. The musical makes a mockery of the typical mission work expected from Mormons, covering everything from their racism, attempts at forced conversion and inner-religious conflicts, all while tap-dancing and singing away.

Review: “Look Back” is short but powerful

“Look Back” is one of the best films of 2024. Inspired by the tragic 2019 Kyoto Animation arson attack, Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator of “Chainsaw Man,” crafts a deeply moving tribute that transforms real-life sorrow into a story of resilience and connection.
