The following were noted at the most recent meeting of the Student Association on Oct. 1. 

SA President Sanjula Jain announced that a temporary student task force is being formed to gather student opinions on what should be emphasized by the Center for Teaching Excellence. This task force is the way for students to contribute to the Center by collecting student opinion about what makes teachers excellent. Email sapres@ rice.edu with CTE in the subject line if you are interested in being a member of this task force. 



Director of the Center for Written, Oral, and Visual Communication Jennifer Wilson made a presentation about services offered by the CWOVC including providing feedback on written work and oral/visual presentations. Learn more at cwovc.rice.edu or visit the 2nd floor Mezzanine of Fondren. 

Lovett College President Christian Neal announced that the Student Activities Presidents Programming fund is looking for students interested in becoming involved with the committee. The SAPP committee reviews applications and awards funds to student organizations. Email sapres@rice.edu with SAPP in the subject line if you are interested in becoming a member of this committee.

SA Internal Vice President Yoonjin Min said that the Real World Roundup, put on by the Career Development Center, will take place during Centennial weekend on Thursday, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m. The Roundup is a chance for students to meet with Rice alumni from around the world. An RSVP is required and you can sign up on Rice Link (ccd.rice. edu) under Events. 

Min stated that Willy's Pub is $28,000 in debt. Managers are working to create a stable business plan and they encourage all students to look into their new services. 

Representatives from the Dean's Cup Task Force collected student opinion at the Senate meeting about potential solutions to issues regarding the President's Cup and IM Sports program. Issues discussed included making the President's Cup a trophy the winning college will hold for a year, emphasizing IM sports sign up during O-week, and charging respective colleges the forfeit fees that are now being paid by captains. 

Sigma Fi representative Bob Williams announced that seniors majoring in Chemistry may be eligible for membership in Sigma Fi, an honorary science and engineering organization. 

The SA will next meet on Monday, Oct. 8, at 9 p.m. in the Farnsworth Pavilion.

Beer Bike canceled due to weather concerns

Despite talk of rain and a possible ‘Beer Run,’ the Beer Bike races seemed like they were proceeding as normal on Saturday. Alumni races were well underway at noon. At 1:30 p.m., the women’s teams were teeing up for their second heat when, under sunny skies, the races abruptly stopped.

‘Will we survive? Will the movement survive?’

Rice Students for Justice in Palestine staged a demonstration April 8. Students walked out in protest of various issues including the detainment of international students; diversity, equity and inclusion rollbacks; ongoing “U.S.-backed genocide” in Palestine; transgender rights and federal funding cuts at the Central Quad from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.

The Hoot to close after 15 years of late night service

After 15 years in business, the Hoot will shut down at the end of the semester. The Hoot has faced staffing and financial challenges since the COVID-19 pandemic, and has reached a point where operations are “no longer sustainable,” Hoot management wrote in an April 8 Instagram post.
