News in Brief: Nick Thorpe chosen for Luce Scholars fellowship
According to a press release from Rice University, the Henry Luce Foundation has chosen Lovett College senior Nick Thorpe as one of 18 nationwide Luce Scholars for 2015-16 who will be placed in a professional setting in an Asian country for 10 months.
The Foundation chose Thorpe for the fellowship after a long selection process, according to the Foundation’s website. The fellowship is open to graduates and graduating seniors who do not have extensive experience with Asia.
After orientation and language study over the summer, the website said an associated organization, the Asia Foundation, will place candidates in professional positions in Asia. Thorpe will conclude his fellowship in July 2016.
“My year as a Luce Scholar will be the most challenging and transformative experience that I have ever encountered,” Thorpe said. “Through this scholarship, I hope to gain a better understanding of [the] communities and governments in the Asian region.”
