Galveston: Ideal Weekend Escape

(04/05/13 12:00am)

Houstonians have a  sometimes complicated and hypocritical relationship with the large island to their southwest. They are quick to express umbrage about the arrogance of northeasterners  dismissing their city, but they put down Galveston with a similar hubris. "The ocean is dirty, the island is gross, and the place is trashy," they claim. Of course, this does not stop them from going to the island year after year.

Craig rises to occasion in Skyfall

(11/16/12 12:00am)

In the middle of the latest James Bond film, Skyfall, the nefarious Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem, No Country for Old Men) meets Bond (Daniel Craig, Casino Royale) for the first time and asks Bond what his hobby is. Without missing a beat, the world's most famous spy replies: "resurrection." It is an excellent response, not simply because Skyfall begins with Bond falling into a river and being assumed dead, but also because Bond has been resurrecting himself for 50 years. Not only are bullets, knives, pits of exotic sea creatures, gargantuan lasers, tarantulas, rocket fumes, bowler hats, footwear, orthodontia, pastry bombs and other items in a veritable smorgasbord of lethality unable to kill Bond, even time itself cannot conquer MI6's most valuable agent. Like Zeus, Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, Bond is immortal.

Election 2012 Guide

(11/02/12 12:00am)

Welcome to the Thresher election guide. In this insert, you will find a breakdown of political views on campus as found in a survey conducted by the Thresher, editorial opinions on the two presidential candidates and summaries about candidates in major local elections. For the purposes of our voters guide, we have only included Republican and Democratic candidates due to space limitations and the fact that the vast majority of Rice students will choose from one of these two parties. For more information about third party candidates please refer to the League of Women Voter's guides or the Green, Libertarian and Constitution Party websites. All candidate positions are taken from either their official campaign websites or their responses to the questions posed by the League of Women Voters. The LWV is a nonpartisan organization with the goal of ensuring that each voter casts an informed vote.

Affleck's Argo worthy of golden fleece, statues

(10/19/12 12:00am)

Charles Dickens used the contrasts and similarities of London and Paris in A Tale of Two Cities to comment on the French Revolution, the current unrest of his time and the human condition. Over 150 years later, Director Ben Affleck (The Town) uses the three world capitals of Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and Tehran in his latest film, Argo, a story about the Iranian Hostage Crisis, the current conflicts in the Middle East and the human condition. Just like I would recommend that everyone read Tale of Two Cities, I urge Rice students to go see Argo.

Welcome Back Concert headlined by Sam Adams, Travis Porter

(08/18/12 12:00am)

While Rice celebrates the well-known ac- ademics and leaders it recruited to speak at the Centennial lectures in Tudor Fieldhouse this October, a decidedly different scene will take place on Saturday at the 2012 RPC Wel- come Back Concert. Instead of a Supreme Court Chief Justice who writes lofty opinions about the constitution there will be rap trio Travis Porter with a song about ordering biscuits at Waffle House while intoxicated. Instead of a renowned scientist dedicated to bringing more women into her field, there will be Sam Adams, whose most famous song is titled "I Hate College." Of course, the main purpose of these colorful music acts is not to elucidate but to entertain as part of an all out effort by the RPC to welcome new and old students to the 2012-2013 school year.

"The Avengers" awes with superhero prowess

(05/24/12 12:00am)

Anyone who knows anything about the Marvel Comic universe knows that the supranational defense organization, known as S.H.I.E.L.D, operates from a flying aircraft carrier. In Marvel's newest superhero movie "The Avengers," Captain America (Chris Evans, "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World") and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo, "Zodiac") land on S.H.I.E.LD, and the audience delights in the scene of the mammoth boat improbably emerging from the ocean. Its huge airborne propeller engines drip with water; the moment is expected but still pretty darn cool.
