Juliette Turner is currently running for SA internal vice president. She is also the Rice University College Republicans chairperson. At the recent IVP debate, when asked if these two roles would conflict, Turner responded, “It wouldn’t conflict. That’s all I have to say if you want to go to the next question.”
We aren’t overreacting.
This is the last week to register to vote in Texas for the upcoming election, and we implore you to do so. In the 2012 election, Texas ranked 48 out of 50 in terms of voter turnout, and its ranking didn’t improve with the 2014 midterm election. Last year, 20 percent of registered Rice students voted in the mayoral election, a significantly higher number than expected. Even so, the average age of voters in this election was 69, leading to the defeat of the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance and one of the closest mayoral races in decades.
There are multiple ways to define a leader and be a leader, all of which are valid in their own spheres. Two clear and different leadership styles are at play in this year’s SA presidential election. Griffin Thomas promises to lead from the front, representing Rice and the student body that will elect him, while Joan Liu promises to lead from behind, following the lead of the students and attitudes on campus.
