WBB fall to USF in the AAC Championship Final

Despite making it to the AAC Championship final for the second year in a row, the Rice women’s basketball team was unable to capture their second-straight title, losing to the University of South Florida 69-62. This was also the second year in a row that the Owls started the tournament in the second round, being ranked tenth and ninth in the conference, respectively.






Football players enter the transfer portal

With the departure of seven-year head coach Mike Bloomgren and the hiring of Scott Abell from Davidson College, the football program has seen numerous changes in personnel. A change in head coach comes with a change in the strategy and staff coming into the team, often leading players and coaches to look for opportunities elsewhere. For players, the transfer portal provides an avenue to consider offers from schools around the country that fit into their desired athletic and academic trajectory. Since the closing of the winter transfer portal Dec. 28, there have already been many changes to the football roster.





Is Rice women’s soccer’s ‘Transfer Forward University’?

On Oct. 3, graduate forward Leah Chancey broke the Temple University defensive line and found herself face-to-face with the goalkeeper. On her first touch, she shot the ball past the keeper, marking her eighth straight game with a goal, breaking the program record and maintaining the longest active goal-scoring streak in the NCAA. 



‘Doing things the right way’: South Main Collective to open doors for athletes and alumni alike

As Name, Image and Likeness policies become the norm in collegiate athletics, its evolving influence continues to shape Rice athletics’ landscape. Rice was the only remaining university in the American Athletic Conference without an athletics-wide NIL collective last semester, but on Aug. 2, 2024, Director of Athletics Tommy McClelland announced the creation of the South Main Collective as the official NIL collective of Rice Athletics. 


MMA and milk miles: Rice students engage with sports

It’s not uncommon to find yourself walking to Reckling Park to watch the baseball team or to the recreational fields to play soccer. However, Division I and intramural sports are only a sliver of what the greater Rice community takes part in. From cricket to mixed martial arts to milk miles (yes, milk miles), students engage in a variety of sports that are a testament to their past pastimes, new endeavors and the need to destress. 


Men’s and Women’s T&F finish strongly at Victor Lopez Classic

Last weekend, the women’s track and field team hosted the 41st Victor Lopez Classic track meet at Rice’s own Wendel D. Ley Track. Following the high school division of the competition, the men’s and women’s collegiate track teams started their events on Friday, March 22, and competed through March 23. The Rice men’s team posted 14 podium finishes with four event titles while the women’s squad finished the meet with 12 top-three performances and another four event titles.





Women’s tennis outlasted by Harvard in season debut on Saturday

After comfortably winning the doubles point and first singles point, the Rice women’s tennis team fell to Harvard University 4-2 on Saturday, Jan. 20. While playing away from home at the Advantage Indoor - Houston Indoor Tennis Club’s facilities due to cold weather, the Owls made their season debut against a Harvard team that played their third match of the season.
