Officer Rommel Espinola, of the Rice University Police Department, passed away on April 9 after being involved in a car accident. Espinola was 48 years old; he is survived by his 9-year-old son, Cullen, according to news reports.

Blain Padgett, a Lovett College junior and defensive lineman on the Rice football team, passed away on March 2 in his apartment. While an official cause of death has yet to be determined, according to a public statement, he is believed to have passed away in his sleep. He was 21 and pursuing a degree in sport management.

Clara Roberts, a recent Duncan College alumna (‘15), passed away April 6. The Pearland, Texas native, who is survived by her parents Suzy and Jay Roberts, was involved in a car accident while driving along Route 28 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Lovett College will be the first residential college to have security cameras installed on the premises by the end of the spring semester, according to Lovett President Tessa Fries. The addition is part of the campus wide plan to install security cameras at all of the residential colleges.

James Patrick Griffith, a McMurtry College alum, passed away unexpectedly on Feb. 27. Griffith, known by his friends as “JP,” was training to become a flight instructor when he was involved in a plane crash near Denver. A Denver native, Griffith is survived by his parents, Bill and Emma, and siblings Gracie and Griff.

Rice University’s endowment is valued at $5.3 billion, the 20th largest in the nation. While it supports 40 percent of Rice’s budget, some students have voiced concerns that academic funding does not reflect endowment size. In an interview with the Thresher, the Rice Management Company clarified how the endowment is allocated and spent.

The Rice Baylor Medical Scholars Program, which combines admission to Rice with admission to Baylor Medical School after graduation if they fulfill certain requirements, has accepted six to 15 students each academic year since its initiation in 1990. Though nine freshmen were admitted this year, those students will now be under altered requirements than previous classes to keep them in line with Baylor's changed prerequisites for all students, according to director of academic advising Aliya Bhimani.

Rice School of Architecture graduate alumni Sam Brisendine (’14) and Scott Key (’15) are working to address the difficult living conditions refugees face. Brisendine and Key have designed a product called Emergency Floor, which allows refugee camp residents to live on an elevated floor.

The Houston mayoral election will take place this fall as Mayor Annise Parker’s final term comes to a close. With no incumbent running for the position, Houstonians will have the opportunity to vote for new hopefuls on Nov. 3. The two winning candidates from the general election will compete in a runoff election in December.
