For the first time, a delegation of Rice students was invited to a meeting of the Texas Student Association in Austin Nov. 6. SA President Selim Sheikh, Student Life Committee Chair Ben Chou and Baker College Senator Maria Pickett comprised the delegation. TSA has brought public university student associations from across the state together since 1948, but has been inactive since the early '90s, Sheikh said.

Jones College freshman Stephanie Tzouanas has been selected by the Rice Centennial Commission to represent the class of 2014 in the planning of Rice's Centennial Celebration that will take place Oct. 10-14, 2012. "I was definitely ecstatic and thrilled," Tzouanas said. "I am incredibly honored to have been chosen."

Provost George McLendon has already made his spacious corner office on the fourth floor of the Allen Center his own. The decorations include many things that might seem unexpected in an administrator's office. There is a wide variety of art on the walls and several paintings are still in bubble wrap waiting to find their place on the wall. A baseball collection adorns the bookshelves and several bottles of wine sit on a shelf for potential guests. A native of Fort Worth, Texas, McLendon returned to his home state to become Rice's provost July 1 after spending the last six years at Duke University. He said he is proud of his Texas roots that can be traced back to the 1830s and his extended family still calls Texas home.

Retired U.S. Army Colonel and former U.S. diplomat Ann Wright addressed an audience of approximately 50 students, faculty and community members on Sept. 9 to discuss her opposition to the the violence used by Israeli Navy to seize the six ships of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla on May 31. Wright was a passenger on Challenger 1, a small yacht in the flotilla. The event was hosted by the Baker Institute Student Forum. Wright resigned from her post as a diplomat after the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and is now a peace activist who spends her time protesting the government's current policies in the Middle East.

Rice students packed the METRORail last Saturday and headed to Reliant Stadium to watch the football team open its season against the No. 5 Texas Longhorns. The Owls lost the game 34-17, but the enthusiasm and spirit shown by Rice fans signaled the beginning of a great year for Rice athletics, Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing and Ticket Sales Ryan Holloway said. Brown College junior Melissa Fwu agreed with Holloway's sentiments.

The Committee on Examinations and Standing received 567 petitions from students requesting exceptions to the university's academic rules last year, an increase of 258 from 2008-2009. About 250 of the students requested permission to add a class after the Week 2 deadline. EX&S is a university standing committee comprised of 11 professors and 3 undergraduates nominated by the Student Association Senate, charged with enforcing the university's academic regulations and considering petitions from students requesting exceptions to these regulations due to extenuating circumstances.
