It has been a somewhat slow start for the Rice Owls soccer team over the first three weeks of the 2018 season. Last year, the Owls were once ranked No. 24 in the nation and earned a spot in the 2017 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship tournament. This year, however, the Owls have lost three of their first four games, including a 5-1 loss to the University of Alabama last Sunday.

A packed crowd in Reckling Park’s Roost watched Rice baseball introduce its new head coach, Matt Bragga, on June 21. After a two-week long search, Rice Athletics named Bragga, the former head coach at Tennessee Tech University, the 20th head coach in program history.

Despite being a member of the Rice tennis team for just two years, redshirt sophomore Eric Rutledge has proven to be one of the team’s most valuable assets. Currently, he has a 19-11 singles record, including victories against players from powerhouse schools like Louisiana State University and Florida State University.

Over spring break, the Rice soccer team took its first ever international trip, a weeklong journey to Spain. They had the chance to compete against various Spanish teams and also visited many famous sites in Barcelona and Valencia.

This past weekend was one to forget for Rice baseball. The Owls suffered four tough defeats against No. 7 Stanford University, losing 7-2, 6-2, 7-4 and 2-0.

Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams opened up their 2018 season with competitions over the weekend. The men’s team was able to defeat Prairie View A&M University with a score of 6-1, but were unable to beat the University of Texas, Rio Grande Valley, losing 4-3. The women’s team competed at the Florida Gulf Coast University Invitational, finishing with a 9-8 record in singles and a 6-3 in doubles.

The Rice Owls swimming team kicked off 2018 with a splash at the Arizona Wildcats Quad Meet and Grand Canyon University Quad Meet this past weekend. At the University of Arizona’s meet, the Owls defeated New Mexico State University and GCU but lost to No. 12 Arizona by 30 points. Senior Alicia Caldwell won first place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.96, while senior Kaitlyn Swinney won the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:17.86.

The Rice women’s soccer team concluded their season on Friday night with a loss against the Baylor University Bears in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. The Owls finished the year with a 12-4-2 record.

First in Conference USA and sixth in the nation in tackles per game. Second in Conference USA in total tackles. Conference USA All-Academic Honors. These are just some of the many feats senior linebacker Emmanuel Ellerbee has achieved during his career at Rice. With his tenure as an Owl coming to a close, he is hoping to accomplish even more.

Not many college athletes have the opportunity to say that they are ranked in the top 20 in the nation in a sport. However, with her performance over the weekend at the Fall Splash Invitational, Wiess College senior Lauren Rhodes can officially call herself one of the best 50-yard freestyle swimmers in the nation.

The Rice Owls football team suffered another loss this weekend, this time to the University of Pittsburgh Panthers. With a final score of 42-10, this marks the Owls’ third straight loss, and brings their record to 1-4.

The Rice women’s swim team raced to second place this weekend in the CSCAA Open Water Championship five-kilometer race held at the University of Kansas. Only Kansas finished ahead of Rice, winning by just four points. The Owls beat out 10 other teams in the event, including the University of Missouri and Southern Illinois University.
