Steffensen chosen to lead O-Week

A new campus-wide Student Director of Orientation was appointed last Wednesday - Brown College junior Peter Steffensen. The committee that chose Steffensen convened last fall and consisted of several former Orientation Week coordinators, former student director Megan Hermance and Assistant to the Dean of Undergraduates Kate Noonan, and applications were released over winter break.


Jewish studies program, minor proposed for fall

Rice University recently published a tentative proposal to add another academic program to its scholastic offerings: Jewish studies. Last Tuesday, President David Leebron held a reception at his house with prospective donors in an attempt to raise the $10 million of funding that Rice estimates it will need to start such a program. If everything goes according to plan, the program will begin as a minor in the fall, Associate Religious Studies Professor Matthias Henze said.


NOD arrests, EMS calls decrease

Once notorious for its drunken antics and the numbers of students it sent to the hospital, Wiess College's annual Night of Decadence, which took place Saturday evening, had few incidents this year - even fewer than last year's NOD. Only one patient was transported to the hospital, and Rice Emergency Medical Services responded to 15 emergency calls while on stand-by at NOD, head of REMS Michael Pandya said.


ANTH 201 creates controversy

Last week, plans for an anthropology assignment had college presidents and masters in discussions with the professor about students' privacy issues. In the week since, the professor has dropped the requirement for using photo or video records in the observational study.Assistant anthropology professor Elizabeth Vann, who teaches ANTH 201: Introduction to Social and Cultural Anthropology, assigned her class a college ethnography project, which requires the students to conduct observational research at a residential college other than their own.
