The Baker Institute Student Forum hosted a student debate on March 22 about the current job market and whether President Barack Obama's policies have had a positive or negative impact so far.
Wondering where all the prospies came from so long before Owl Days? Rice's admission board invited 210 prospective students to campus this year to participate in last weekend's VISION program. According to Associate Director of Admission Laura Villafranca, VISION, now in its 16th year, is an opportunity to showcase the university to a strong group of minority applicants in a way that goes beyond a traditional campus visit.
The Wellness Center is holding a month-long event this February called "Love Your Body Month," which focuses on promoting a healthy body image. LYBM is a campus-wide campaign that will be an education and outreach program aimed at increasing awareness of healthy body image around campus. Wellness Center intern Sherry Lin and Dietician Maria Tsakalis are coordinating LYBM events. The events center around educating students about healthy eating habits.
The cheers of Duncan College students filled the air Nov. 19 as members of the Rice community gathered to celebrate the official inauguration of Rice's 11th residential college. Charles Duncan ('47) and his wife Anne attended the formal ceremony which recognized their $30 million contribution which the made Duncan's construction possible.Dean of Undergraduates John Hutchinson introduced the event and a procession of the presidents of the other 10 colleges, accompanied by members of their respective colleges. Chairman of the Rice Board of Trustees Jim Crownover introduced President David Leebron, who said a few words of thanks to the Duncans and emphasized the importance of the residential college system to the university.
Due to rules regarding the use of available office spaces in the Student Center, student organizations RTV5 and the Hispanic Association for Cultural Enrichment at Rice are at risk of losing their spaces in the spring because they do not fulfill the required minimum 10 hours of office hours each week.Every club with space in the Student Center is required to hold at least 10 office hours per week, with at least one officer present during that time. Director of the Student Center Boyd Beckwith said that at the last Student Center Advisory Council meeting Nov. 8, it was discovered that RTV5 and HACER are having trouble getting their requirement of 10 hours per week. Beckwith said that these two organizations have been notified that they need to increase their office hours or they will risk losing their space in the spring. They will be invited to the next council meeting if they wish to explain why they cannot meet the 10-hour requirement.
Beginning next semester, the weekend schedules for each of the serveries will be reconfigured following the opening of East Servery. South and West Serveries will be closed all day on Saturdays, while the Baker and Sid Richardson Serveries will be closed on Sundays.In order to alleviate the pressure on South to feed most of the population of the south residential colleges, the individual serveries of Baker College and Sid Richardson College have been open on Sundays this semester. According to Director of Residential Dining David McDonald, without these additional serveries available, South would have been over its capacity. This was a one-semester anomaly, however, and will no longer occur once East opens.
The campus resonated with voices shouting, "Three cheers for Murt, Murt, Murt; leave other colleges in the dirt, dirt, dirt," last Friday afternoon, as members of the Rice community gathered to celebrate the official inauguration of McMurtry College.McMurtry is Rice's 10th residential college. Burt (Baker '56 and '57) and Deedee (Brown '56) McMurtry flew in from their home in California to attend the formal ceremony recognizing their contribution which made building McMurtry possible.
Plans for the new School of Continuing Studies are moving forward thanks to a donation made by Houstonians Susanne and Melbern Glasscock. The School of Continuing Studies offers courses for Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate teachers, English as a second language and foreign languages, philanthropy and nonprofit research and a master's degree program, as well as other courses for personal development.
Sid Richardson College is saying goodbye to four members of its family at the end of this year: Nick and Kate Pascuzzi, one-year-old baby Lluisa and their famed DVD collection.The Pascuzzis are moving to Boston to be closer to family. Students agree that they have offered a great support system during their three years at the college. Sid Rich President Mary Johnson said that she has noticed a definite positive change in the dynamic at Sid Rich since the Pascuzzis' arrival.
The hedges are alive with the sound of parents this weekend for Rice's annual Families Weekend.Families Weekend kicked off yesterday and will last until Sunday. Approximately 1,500 parents and guests of students are expected to attend. The theme for this year is the "Dynamic Community" and is centered around the 11 residential colleges working together to create a dynamic Rice community.

This year, H&D is pioneering a solution to this problem by offering MicroFridges, a freezer/microwave combination available for rental for $247 for the school year or for purchase for $489.Rice has not allowed microwaves in student rooms since 2007 because of risks associated with vermin infestation due to waste generated from microwaveable items as well as the risk of electrical surges. The microwave oven included in the MicroFridge unit is the first and only one approved for use in the Rice residential colleges.
