After winning the conference title and making its first NCAA tournament appearance in three years last season, Rice is on to 2018. The Owls announced their 2018 signing class last week, adding six new players to its roster. Head coach Nicky Adams said she is thrilled to welcome the incoming class.
The Rice women’s basketball team captured a signature win Saturday at Tudor Fieldhouse when it defeated conference leader Western Kentucky University 73-58. But the Owls have a quick turnaround. Thursday night, they face off against the University of Alabama, Birmingham, which took the Conference USA lead with WKU’s loss. An Owls’ win would put them in a three-way tie in the loss column for first place in C-USA alongside UAB and WKU.
It has been 15 years since Rice baseball claimed the school’s first and only national championship. The image of the team’s dogpile on the Rosenblatt Stadium mound is still etched in the memories of Rice fans a decade and a half later. But the season itself is memorable for far more than its finish.
Head coach Mike Bloomgren completed his first recruiting class at Rice on Wednesday by signing 17 players to National Letters of Intent, a binding commitment to play football for Rice. The 17 players signed Wednesday add to the six players Rice acquired during the early signing period. Bloomgren said he is thrilled with the recruits set to join the Owls.

Rice men’s basketball continued to struggle over winter break, losing six games in a row before picking up a win on Saturday to push its record to 4-13. Despite the overall record, the Owls are now 1-3 in Conference USA, which matches last season’s start. In the 2016-17 season, Rice finished 10-8 in the conference.
New football head coach Mike Bloomgren signed the first players of Rice’s 2018 recruiting class during college football’s early signing period. The Owls added six players in all: defensive end Miles Adams, cornerbacksAndrew Bird and Jason White, offensive linemen Cole Garcia and Clay Servin and linebacker Ja’Quez Brattley. All six players hail from Texas and are two-star recruits according to 247Sports.

Rice University officially welcomed new football Head Coach Mike Bloomgren Wednesday afternoon. Bloomgren, the 19th head coach in Rice football’s history, replaces David Bailiff, who was let go last week after 11 seasons at the helm.
According to multiple sources, current Stanford University Offensive Coordinator Mike Bloomgren is finalizing a deal to become Rice football’s next head coach. An official announcement from the athletic department is expected later today.
As the referees blew the final whistle in the Powderpuff championship game, McMurtry College students poured onto the Rice Stadium field to celebrate. Their college had just won its second consecutive Powderpuff title, this time in a 12-0 victory over Hanszen College. McMurtry sophomore running back Miranda Lee said she was extremely proud to win once again.

Rice Athletics announced Monday afternoon that Head Coach David Bailiff had been relieved of his duties after 11 years at the helm of the football team. The move comes after the team’s 1-11 regular season, its worst since 1988. Bailiff said he was disappointed but understood the decision.
Remember that Rice basketball team from last year? The one that went 23-12, made the College Basketball Invitational and had hopes of competing for the conference title in the near future? The one that made the “Rice Rising” mantra head coach Mike Rhoades had preached for years finally feel real?
Last year’s Rice volleyball season ended in heartbreak in the conference tournament. The Owls lost in five sets to Western Kentucky University, nearly pulling off an improbable run the conference championship as the No. 6 seed. This year, the No. 3 seeded Owls are looking to redeem themselves. They open the Conference USA tournament on Friday against the University of Southern Mississippi in Bowling Green, Kentucky. According to head coach Genny Volpe, the team is prepared for a battle.
The University of Southern Mississippi led 10-0 in the first quarter of Rice football’s homecoming game. Then chaos ensued. The Rice and Southern Miss offenses combined to score on the next 11 possessions before a Rice turnover on downs effectively ended the game in the fourth quarter. The Golden Eagles came away from the shootout victorious with a 43-34 win to drop Rice to 1-9 on the season and 1-5 in Conference USA play.
Rice soccer’s historic season came to an end Friday night with a 3-2 loss to Baylor University in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
