Told by Tolpadi: In keeping Bailiff, Owls commit to mediocrity

(01/10/17 3:53am)

The Rice University football team entered the 2016 season with high expectations. It returned 18 of 22 starters from a team that finished a disappointing 5-7 from a year ago. The thinking was that, with internal player development and improvement in the face of significant roster turnover elsewhere in Conference USA, the Owls would be able to take a step forward in the conference and return to a bowl game. These beliefs were shared by C-USA media members, who predicted Rice to finish third in the C-USA West Division, a finish that likely would have meant a bowl game appearance.

Told by Tolpadi: After football's brutal start, it is time for Bailiff to go

(10/04/16 3:37am)

After a 44-28 loss to the University of Southern Mississippi, the Rice University football team will head into its bye week winless, sporting an 0-5 record. The team has alarmingly taken steps back in numerous key categories; most embarrassingly, the team ranks dead last among all Division I schools in yards allowed per game (567) and 120th in points allowed per game (40.2). With the team in the midst of a second straight down season and facing the heightened expectations that come with football facility upgrades, the time has come for Head Coach David Bailiff to go.

Football loses heartbreaker in double overtime

On the heels of an explosive rushing attack and a crucial fourth down stop to seal the game, the University of North Texas Mean Green stunned the Rice Owls at home, storming back from a 17-0 deficit to win the game 42-35 in overtime. The loss dropped Rice to 0-4 (0-2) on the season and delivered a significant blow to the team’s bowl game hopes.

Tragedy overshadows game as Owls fall to 0-2

(09/13/16 4:49pm)

Led by 107 rushing yards and three touchdowns from sophomore running back Andy Davidson, the Army triple option offense proved to be too much for the Rice University football team as the Black Knights handed the Owls their second loss of the season with a 31-14 victory. In retrospect, however, the game feels meaningless, as sophomore Army cornerback Brandon Jackson, who started the game for the Black Knights, died in a car crash hours after the game concluded.

Football leaning on senior leaders in quest to return to bowl game

(08/30/16 3:56am)

As the Rice University football team looks forward to the fast-approaching 2016 season, it does so with the usual goals for the season: Compete for a Conference USA title, play in a quality postseason bowl game and finish the year as a top-25 team. Coming off a 2015 season in which it failed to qualify for a bowl game for the first time since 2011, the team will enter the 2016 slate more motivated than it has been in years to return to those heights. According to Lyons, the team is ready to begin the new campaign.

Football enters new season in new home

(08/23/16 3:15am)

As the Rice University football team prepares for the 2016 season, it is doing so in the $31.5 million Brian Patterson Sports Performance Complex, a new facility that opened this summer. Coming off a disappointing 2015 season in which they failed to qualify for a bowl game for the first time since 2011, the team is looking to open its new facility with a winning season and a return to postseason play.

Homecoming Heartbreak: Nine-year homecoming winning streak comes to an end

(11/18/15 3:01pm)

On Homecoming 2015, the Rice University football team fell to the University of Southern Mississippi in a 65-10 defeat. The Golden Eagles were led by 386 passing yards and five touchdowns from junior quarterback Nick Mullens. The Owls’ senior quarterback Driphus Jackson was sacked five times in the first half and replaced by redshirt junior Tyler Stehling at the end of the second quarter. The homecoming loss dropped the Owls to 4-6 (2-4) on the season and extended the team’s losing streak to three games.
