As spring practices came to an end, the Rice football team had their annual Blue-Gray scrimmage Friday night at Rice Stadium. The game allowed all players to get some in-game action prior to the offseason, but the focus was on the three quarterbacks competing for the starting job. The offense, which wore the blue uniforms, defeated the defense, who wore the gray uniforms, with a score of 47-25.

After losing two out of three games in a Conference USA series against Florida International University this past weekend, the Rice baseball team has now lost nine of its last 10 games and has a 7-19 record for the season. The Owls got swept three games to none in their first conference series of the season against Old Dominion University, and they now have a 1-5 conference record after this weekend’s results. Despite the early troubles, junior infielder and pitcher Dane Myers said he thinks the team can turn things around after a lackluster start to the season.

With standout performances from senior forward Jasmine Goodwine and sophomore guard Lauren Grigsby, the Rice women’s basketball team won the quarterfinal game of the Women’s Basketball Invitational on Sunday afternoon. With the 73-63 victory over the University of Texas, Rio Grande Valley, the Owls will advance to the tournament semifinal. Head coach Tina Langley said she was impressed by the attitude of the team in their win.

Since splitting its opening series, the Rice baseball team has lost three of the last four games it has played. The Owls lost against Dallas Baptist University last Tuesday, falling 8-4 in their home opener, and then lost two out of three against Southeastern Louisiana University in a three-game weekend series.

Led by performances by junior Kaitlyn Swinney and junior Alicia Caldwell, the Rice women’s swim team finished in second place at the Conference USA championships last week. The 749 points accumulated by the Owls was not enough to defeat Florida International University, which won its third straight title with a total of 922.5 points.

The Rice baseball team kicked off the 2017 season with a four game road series against the University of Texas, Austin.. After a hard-fought series, the two teams came away with two wins apiece and started the season 2-2.
