The morning after Donald Trump’s electoral victory, a palpable gloom had settled over Rice University’s campus. Laughter was scarce; students gave their friends hugs and offered words of support. Some professors took time out of class to discuss the election, while some students described an immobilizing despondence as they tried to go about their daily routine. Others who identify as conservatives or supported Trump, however, expressed more optimistic sentiments.

Rice Engineering Alumni has committed $50,000 to improving laboratory classes in the mechanical engineering department. The funding comes in response to student concerns raised over the past six months regarding outdated curriculum and facilities, including at a highly attended town hall meeting last semester.

The halftime show at the Rice University vs. Baylor University football game on Friday attracted national attention over the weekend after Rice’s Marching Owl Band referenced Baylor’s recent sexual assault scandal in their performance. Many national news and sports media including ESPN, NBC Sports, Fox Sports and the Washington Post published articles regarding the show and a subsequent apology to Baylor fans released by Rice’s administration on Saturday.

The Student Association Senate unanimously voted to table a resolution that would have censured the Faculty Senate for approving new limits on the number of credit hours undergraduates can take. The changes, which reduce the maximum number of credit hours from 20 to 18 for students beginning with this year’s freshmen, were approved by Faculty Senate in April at a meeting attended by over 100 student protesters.

The Rice University Board of Trustees added four new members starting July 1, three of whom are Rice alumni, according to a Rice News press release. The alumni are Khan Academy chairperson Ann Doerr (Jones ‘75), Stellus Capital Management managing partner Robert Ladd (Wiess ‘78) and Covariance Capital Management president Scott Wise (Will Rice ‘71); the fourth member, Riverstone Holdings partner James Hackett, formerly served as a trustee from 2010 to 2013.
