Note: this story is developing. On October 23, Student Association President Justin Onwenu stated that plans have changed and the resolution with the Lifetime Enrichment proposal will not be introduced Nov. 7. Instead, students will be asked whether they approve the proposed Lifetime Enrichment program on the mandatory Survey of All Students administered at the end of the semester. Onwenu said he would bring the proposal back to Senate after the survey no matter the outcome, but that he wanted to better assess student opinion first. Several bike team captains and one float builder have called into question the 2017 Beer Bike results released by Rice Program Council on April 5. Martel and Brown Colleges have filed appeals of the men's race results while the Graduate Student Association has filed an appeal of the women's results. Meanwhile, Jones College float builder Matt O’Gorman said Jones would have placed third rather than fourth in the float contest had their highest score from the judges not been thrown out, but the campuswide Beer Bike coordinators said they removed this score because it was an outlier.

The 2017 move-out date for nongraduating students has been changed to Friday, May 5 at noon in the housing agreement. Last year, students were required to move out by May 16 at 4 p.m. In response, several students are working with Housing and Dining to change the move-out date until after graduation.

The Faculty Senate Working Group on General Education and Distribution Requirements is proposing three major changes to the Distribution Requirements: reducing general education requirements from 36 credit hours to 30 hours, revising the language for each distribution group and placing the Course Review Committee from each of the six schools in charge of recommending courses for distribution credit.

Current Student Association External Vice President Hannah Todd announced she is running a write-in campaign for SA president Monday night just after voting in the election began. Todd first announced her candidacy on Facebook close to 9 p.m. but deleted the post several minutes later. Todd’s post came almost an hour after voting opened at 8 p.m. At 9:24 p.m., Todd posted again to confirm her campaign.

While five candidates will be contesting the Student Association presidency and external vice presidency, no undergraduates submitted a petition to run for SA internal vice president or treasurer in next week’s first round general election. The positions will be open in a second round election which will take place after Spring Break. Current deputy treasurer Ameesh Shah said he will run for treasurer in the second round; no candidates have yet come forward for internal vice president.

The Student Association dissolved Rice Video Productions as a blanket tax subsidiary organization in a vote that was unanimous except for one abstention. The Monday vote came after Jeremy Kao, the RVP station manager, sent a letter to the SA on Jan. 23 requesting RVP no longer receive blanket tax funds, prompting the Blanket Tax Committee to recommend dissolution to the SA.
