SA voting records show high pass rates, unconstitutional procedures

Despite constitutional mandates requiring comprehensive Student Association voting records, a Thresher investigation showed issues with transparency and found voting procedures to be unconstitutional. The SA has also approved greater than 95 percent of legislation introduced over the past three years, an aspect that SA President Griffin Thomas said he has been attempting to address with increased debate this year.


MECH continues push for change at town hall

Mechanical engineering faculty and students discussed departmental weaknesses and ways to improve the undergraduate experience during the MECH Department Town Hall Meeting organized by the Rice MECH Advisory Board on Friday. The four key areas of focus were the classroom experience, research experience, organization of labs and job opportunities.

As voters at Rice and across the country prepare to choose a new president, the Thresher spoke with NBC News journalist Hallie Jackson regarding the closing days of the presidential campaign and her experiences covering the race. Jackson, who hosts the 1 p.m. hour on MSNBC, extensively covered the Republican Party primary campaigns and will be contributing to NBC's Election Night coverage today beginning at 6 p.m.



SA narrowly passes bill to create pre-health task force

When Student Association Internal Vice President Komal Luthra introduced Senate Bill #2 “To Charter a Health Professions Task Force” at the SA meeting on Sept. 13, the proposed committee size was 30, including one chair, one co-chair, four subcommittee chairs and 24 members. But when the bill passed on Monday in a narrow margin of 14 in favor, nine opposed and one abstaining, the committee was reduced to six members. This change was one of several amendments made with the purpose of reframing the task force from bolstering resources for pre-health students to assessing whether a lack of resources even exists.



Student Association introduces resolution supporting security cameras

The Student Association introduced Resolution #2 on Student Feedback on the Policy for Implementation of Security Cameras on Campus on Monday. The resolution affirms the SA’s support of camera implementation but also notes student concerns collected from an survey sent out by the Student Association in August.




Students learn active shooter response

Around 40 students attended the Rice University Police Department’s upgraded active shooter training at Brown College on Saturday. Over the last four years, RUPD has provided lecture and video based training to 1,100 people, but this training, which includes practical application exercises, is the first of its kind, according to lead instructor Sergeant Tom Hudak.


Bob McNair talks entrepreneurship

The McNair Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation hosted “A Conversation with Bob McNair” at the Baker Institute on Monday. In 2015, the McNairs gifted $8 million to Rice University to establish the McNair Center at the Baker Institute, which provides analyses of issues affecting entrepreneurship and innovation. McNair, a philanthropist and businessman is best known as the founder of Cogen Technologies and the founder, chairman and CEO of the Houston Texans.


Students pursue political passions, blue or red

On Beer Bike morning, while the rest of Rice was preparing to ingest liquid at high speeds, Duncan College sophomore Maurice Frediere was at the convention for Senate District 13 to elect delegates for each precinct within the district. There, Frediere ran unopposed to be the delegate for Precinct 361, the polling location in the Rice Memorial Center, at the Texas State Convention, setting himself on a path to attend the Democratic National Convention. But Frediere is far from the only Rice student to become an active participant in politics. In 2016, students engaged from the grassroots level up to the national level and on either side of party lines to make young people’s voices heard.



Faculty Senate approval of credit hour limit in face of student protests spurs campus debate

The Faculty Senate voted 14 to nine Wednesday in favor of the Committee for Undergraduate Curriculum’s proposal to lower the limit on credit hours undergraduate students can enroll in from 20 hours to 18 hours, starting with the incoming class of 2020. More than 100 students attended the Faculty Senate meeting to protest against the proposal in a sit-in organized by the Student Association, with at least 50 remaining until the vote on the changes two hours after the meeting began.
