On Nov. 6, our students made history in the ballot boxes, significantly outpacing the turnout for the presidential election two years prior. On Nov. 7, two students published an opinion piece downplaying this progress and insinuating that electoral activism wasn't an effective means to change the world. On behalf of the Rice University Young Democrats, we felt a response was necessary.

A recent op-ed criticized Rice’s administration for publicly supporting Dreamers. The author, Anson Fung, stated, “Rice’s mission statement summarizes that ‘Rice University aspires to [cultivate] a diverse community of learning and discovery that produces leaders across the spectrum of human endeavor’” and that Rice should be “cultivating an environment where ideas are free from prejudice.” Anson claims that the administration should not take stances on “contentious” political issues like Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, considering that Hanszen College was split on the Bar Removal of Individuals Who Dream and Grow Our Economy Act.

Juliette Turner is currently running for SA internal vice president. She is also the Rice University College Republicans chairperson. At the recent IVP debate, when asked if these two roles would conflict, Turner responded, “It wouldn’t conflict. That’s all I have to say if you want to go to the next question.”
