Friday's Sports Update:Thundering Herd trampled by Owls

Though statistically Rice toned down its offense Friday afternoon, the runs came early and often enough to best Marshall University 18-0 in the team's third game of the Conference USA Championship. The win today propels Rice into the championship game Saturday night. The Owls (38-20, 17-7 C-USA) matched their 11-run inning from last night, today in the second inning. Senior Steven Sultzbaugh got the scoring started with a grand slam, his second home run in as many games. The Herd (27-31, 12-12 C-USA) walked in two runs, and senior first baseman Jimmy Comerota contributed a two-run single. Sophomore left fielder Michael Fuda then smacked his second hit of the inning, as did Sultzbaugh with a two-RBI double.


Wednesday's Sports Update: Baseball loots Pirates in search of C-USA title

Rice's journey in the Conference USA Championship began Wednesday afternoon at the University of Houston, where the Owls beat East Carolina University 11-3 at Cougar Field. Sophomore Taylor Wall (5-5) started for Rice Wednesday and was immediately awarded run support, a welcome development for the lefty. Junior right fielder Chad Mozingo led off the first with a double and scored on junior shortstop Rick Hague's homer to left field. Sophomore third baseman Anthony Rendon also scored thanks to a single by senior catcher Diego Seastrunk.


Shumway selected as HUMA dean

As the search for a new dean of undergraduates begins, the search for a new dean of humanities ends, a year after it began, with the selection of Nicolas Shumway, who will become the new dean of humanities beginning July 1. Shumway will be replacing former dean of humanities Gary Wihl, who resigned last year. Allen Matusow, a history professor who served as Rice's humanities dean for 14 years in the 1980s and early 90s, has worked as interim dean for the past school year.

At the conclusion of yesterday's game, senior catcher Diego Seastrunk said, "We have to play every pitch. I feel like this team loses focus easily, and we get behind and we lose our focus so we just have to play every pitch as if it's our last."Rice certainly kept its focus tonight as it bested the University of Houston 24-3 (in seven innings) in its second game of the Conference USA Championship.

Coming off a string of offensively dominated games, Rice toned down the bats tonight but still found success with its 5-2 victory over the University of Alabama-Birmingham. With their win today, the Owls (34-19, 16-6 Conference USA) capture sole possession of the C-USA regular season championship. They will also hold the first seed in the C-USA Championship, which begins at the University of Houston May 26. Jared Rogers (7-1) started for Rice this evening and pitched splendidly, forfeiting only four hits with no runs and four strikeouts.


Friday's Sports Update: Baseball defeats UAB in second game of conference series

A pair of homers provided all the runs no. 21 Rice needed behind a stellar pitching performance, and the Owls topped the University of Alabama-Birmingham 9-2 in the second game of this conference series.UAB (27-25, 10-13 Conference USA) opened the scoring with Luke Stewart's first inning two-run shot, but that would be it for the Blazers. Senior right hander Mike Ojala (4-2) was dialed in for his final regular season start and tossed 7 and two-thirds innings, forfeiting only two hits with a new career high of 12 strikeouts.


Sunday's Sports Update : Baseball topples Southern Miss to clinch top spot in C-USA tournament

After inclement weather delayed the first two games of this conference series, today's game started as scheduled beneath sunny skies. Rice split yesterday afternoon's doubleheader with the University of Southern Mississippi, and the Owls captured the rubber game today 21-14 to win the series as well as capture the top seed in the upcoming Conference USA tournament.Senior Jared Rogers (6-1) started for Rice (32-19, 15-6 C-USA) while freshman Jay Myrick (3-0) got the ball for the Eagles (30-19, 12-9 C-USA) in his third career start. Neither pitcher lasted long - both forfeited six runs and were gone by the third inning.


Buckyball discovery room named national chemical landmark

The success of the buckyball at Rice 25 years ago has earned its place of discovery, room 337 in the Space Science Building, renown as a national historic chemical landmark.The buckyball, a 60-carbon structure in the shape of a soccer ball which was initially observed in outer space, was recreated at Rice in 1985 by Nobel Laureate and late physics professor Richard Smalley and colleagues Professors Robert Curl (Rice University) and Harold Kroto (University of Sussex), who won the 1996 Nobel Prize in chemistry for their work. Buckyballs were named after the famous architect Richard Buckminster Fuller, who helped popularize the geodesic dome to which buckyballs bear a resemblance.


On-campus housing numbers drop

Extra space - previously a rare phenomenon in terms of on campus housing - is apparently abundant for the fall of 2010.McMurtry College and Duncan College are still not filled to capacity, even with a high number of freshmen assigned to them for next year, Associate Dean of Undergraduates Matt Taylor said. The colleges should be fully occupied for the fall of 2012, he said.


Tuesday's Sports Update : Baseball defeats Texas State 16-2

After eight days of no baseball due to finals, Rice was back at it at Reckling Park this afternoon, taking on Texas State University in a rescheduled game from Feb. 23. The Owls (27-16, 11-4 Conference USA) were firing on all cylinders today and romped their way to a 16-2 win over the Bobcats (28-15, 18-6 Southland Conference). Senior Jared Rogers (5-1) was on the mound first for Rice and delivered splendidly, tossing five innings with only three hits. He forfeited no runs and walked only one while striking out three.


Kristof highlights global gender inequality

The New York Times journalist and op-ed columnist Nicolas Kristof brought many personal accounts of suffering he has seen among women throughout the world to a filled Doré Commons at the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy April 8. Kristof is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner and has traveled to 140 countries. Much of his work focuses on the Darfur region and human trafficking. In addition to his journalistic work, Kristof has devoted efforts to advocacy, in the belief that helping and educating women will help fight extremism and worldwide poverty.

Rice dug itself into an early hole tonight that it could not crawl out of, and the team fell to Dallas Baptist University 7-6.Sophomore Matthew Reckling (1-1) notched his first start for the Owls (17-13, 4-2 Conference USA) this evening at Reckling Park but could not find control of his pitches, walking three and forcing in a run via a hit batter before being pulled in the first inning.


Saturday's Sports Update : Baseball earns first series sweep of the season over Houston

Rice snagged a series sweep of the University of Houston this afternoon in exciting fashion. The Owls (17-12, 4-2 Conference USA), having already captured the Silver Glove Trophy last night for the 10th consecutive season, won 7-6 in 12 innings.Houston (12-14, 2-4 C-USA) got on the board in the first inning with a bloop double down the line, two singles and a sacrifice fly to total two runs. Rice responded by loading the bases in the first. Sophomore third baseman Anthony Rendon approached the plate and with one swing of the bat doubled Houston's run output. The grand slam was his 11th home run of the season.


Thursday's Sports Update : Baseball blanks Houston 6-0

Coming off a mediocre 3-5 road trip, the Rice baseball team found its way home to Reckling Park tonight and toppled crosstown rival Houston 6-0. This game, the first in the season series for the coveted Silver Glove Trophy, was the third win in a row for the Owls (15-12, 2-2 Conference USA), who this week dropped out of Baseball America's Top 25 rankings for the first time this season.Sophomore starter Taylor Wall (1-4) got the ball tonight looking for his first win of the season, and he delivered in pristine fashion. The southpaw tossed a complete game-the first of any pitcher for the Owls this season-and surrendered only one hit and two walks with seven strikeouts. The lone Cougar hit came in the first inning.


Surls shares insight behind sculptures

James Surls, whose seven art pieces were installed on campus last month, enlightened the crowd about his art philosophy and the ideas behind his plant-like sculptures in a lecture Tuesday at Herring 100 . The seven pieces in the exhibit, which arrived Feb. 21, are entitled "Magnficent Seven: Houston Celebrates Surls" and reflect a connection with nature, featuring titles like "All Diamond," "Ten Big Standing Bronze Flowers" and "Standing Vase With Five Flowers." Before their appearance in Houston, five of the seven pieces on display were exhibited on Park Avenue in New York City.


Rice receives high score for game design

Computer gaming - usually a top procrastination activity - is now a productive endeavor for Rice students. Rice earned a spot in the Princeton Review and GamePro magazine's top 50 schools for computer game design. Computer Science Professor Joe Warren (Sid Richardson '83) started the program 10 years ago with the class COMP 460: Advanced Computer Graphics. The Computer Science Department also offers a freshman gaming class, COMP 160, and the Visual and Dramatic Arts Department offers a 3-D modeling class, ARTS 102.


Casino party security pays off

Nearly 800 party-goers, several donning fake hair braids and blue body paint, made their way to Lovett College last Saturday for the college's annual Casino Night, themed after the movie Avatar. As the partiers arrived at Lovett, they encountered a facade of "floating" mountains, a bridge over a water pit and a small waterfall complete with dry ice to give the appearance of fog. Lovett students started work on the façade before spring break and through the week preceeding the party, Lovett Chief Justice Jay Patel said.


Saturday Sports Update : 12-run sixth inning aids Owls to 26-11 victory over Cal

Rice entered this four-game series against California with eight wins in its last nine games. But with two straight losses and a 7-2 deficient in the sixth inning of this afternoon's game, Rice appeared to be on the downswing. However, the Owls found their offensive firepower and bested the Golden Bears (9-4) 26-11 in a game that involved 37 total runs and 41 hits.Junior Tony Cingrani (1-0) picked up the start for the Owls (9-7) today and surrendered five earned runs in 2.2 innings of work. He was relieved by freshman Tyler Duffey (2-0), who was effective over his 4.1 innings and notched the win.


Sunday Sports Update Baseball splits series with Cal with Sunday matinee victory

Coming off a game yesterday with 37 total runs and 41 hits, one would expect both Rice and the University of California to be moving a little slower today. But the Owls were still riding high from yesterday's offensive exhibition and scrounged up enough runs to beat Cal 7-4 and split the four-game series. Rice (10-7) picked up its first run in the second, with sophomore catcher Craig Manuel's single that scored sophomore third baseman Anthony Rendon. In the third inning, senior first baseman Jimmy Comerota walked and later made his way around the bases to score on a sacrifice bunt by junior shortstop Rick Hague.


Tuesday Sports Update : Baseball battles rain to hook the 'Horns

On a damp and drizzly evening, 14th-ranked Rice hosted second-ranked Texas at Reckling Park and came away with a 10-6 win. Rice (11-7) opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning off Texas starter Austin Dicharry (0-1). Sophomore third baseman Anthony Rendon-current Conference USA Co-Hitter of the Week-brought in junior right fielder Chad Mozingo with a sacrifice fly, while sophomore catcher Craig Manuel drove in left fielder Michael Fuda for his first RBI of what would turn out to be a productive day.
