Mirror's Edge remix album a good listen

(11/14/08 12:00am)

To coincide with this week's arrival of the highly anticipated and much-hyped video game Mirror's Edge, EA and EA Digital Illusions CE (DICE) have also released a digital album featuring the game's theme song by Lisa Miskovsky, as well as five different remixes by noted dance and electronica artists Benny Benassi, Junkie XL, Paul Van Dyk, Teddybears and Armand Van Helden. As a whole, the album is a solid effort and definitely worth a listen, but listeners shouldn't expect anything groundbreaking. The title track, "Still Alive" (not to be confused with the hilarious end-credit song by GLaDOS at the end of Portal), is performed by Swedish pop rock star Miskovsky, who enjoys a considerable reputation across the pond in Sweden but is relatively unknown here in the states, although she did help write of "Shape Of My Heart" for the Backstreet Boys in 2000.

Fallout 3: The future's so bright, it glows in the dark

(11/07/08 12:00am)

After four long years in development, Fallout 3 finally emerged from the vault last week. Was it worth the wait? Hell, yes.In the game's alternate history, technology after World War II evolved at an incredible pace while American society remained rooted in the idyllic, Leave it to Beaver-esque 1950s, similar to Disneyworld's Tomorrowland, only with the imminent threat of nuclear holocaust on everyone's mind. Nuclear war eventually broke out between the United States and China, and scores of people across America took shelter in giant underground Vault-Tec fallout shelters to escape the destruction and wait for the radiation to clear.

Too much Max, not enough Payne

(10/24/08 12:00am)

Last Friday Max Payne, the movie adaptation of the video game of the same name, hit theaters. Overall, the movie is solid, but when critiqued as an action flick, it is like ordering a hot juicy steak and receiving a chicken salad.Mark Wahlberg (The Happening) stars as the titular character, an NYPD detective still following leads on his wife and child's murders from three years ago. While at an informant's house party, he runs into Natasha Sax (upcoming Quantum of Solace Bond girl Olga Kurylenko), who later winds up hacked to pieces in an alley behind Max's apartment. When Max realizes that his wife's and Natasha's murders are somehow related, he teams up with Natasha's sister Mona (Forgetting Sarah Marshall's Mila Kunis) to find the murderer.

Spectactular Cyrano

(10/24/08 12:00am)

The Alley Theatre's latest production of Edmond Rostand's 1897 comedy, Cyrano de Bergerac, is nothing short of spectacular. For anyone who did not read the play in a high school English class, here's a summary: It follows the dashing exploits of French Army cadet Cyrano de Bergerac. He is an expert swordsman who has a penchant for poetry and a gift for words, but he also has an exceptionally large nose that kills his confidence with the ladies, especially with his distant cousin Roxane. When Roxane falls in love with an inarticulate cadet named Christian, who can't string together a coherent sentence to save his life, Cyrano decides to help Christian out by telling him what to say to Roxane, and the play takes off from there.
