ROPE trips offer outdoor opportunities

(03/19/10 12:00am)

Maybe I was high on spring break and too much sunshine, but after a rigorous week of backcountry camping in Big Bend National Park, I felt great.Sure, I came back with worn-out sneakers and multiple loads of laundry; I had aching shoulders, tired muscles and a sore butt; my hair, attempting the "sexy camp hair" look, would better be described as "I-can-tell-you-haven't-showered-in-a-week hair;" the smell emanating from my shoes to my travel bag was disgusting; to top it off, my insides didn't feel so hot, either.

Optional exams cultivate independence

(01/22/10 12:00am)

Exam week can be wonderful. There are no regularly scheduled classes, no mandatory homework assignments, breakfast opens early and everyone is gearing up for vacation with holiday parties and winter festivities. But the horrors of exam week often outweigh many of the positives. All your friends are shackled to their laptops and textbooks, you have more papers than you want to write, there are more tests than are possible to study for and you find your sleep and meals sacrificed for the looming pressures that abound in that final week of class.

NOD enforces contorted body perceptions

(11/13/09 12:00am)

Okay ladies, NOD is over. We no longer have to worry about fitting into our skimpiest lingerie costumes, and we can once again join the lengthy line for Chef Roger's cinnamon rolls. Families Weekend exposes campus events

(10/02/09 12:00am)

It was Saturday morning. I was sitting in the commons perusing that morning's edition of The New York Times, and though I had a mountain of work that screamed for an appointment with Fondren, I was going to neglect it. This year's Families Weekend brought students' families to the Rice campus, featured a smorgasbord of diverse, exciting events and provided a great excuse for students to step out of their dorm rooms and appreciate Rice from a non-student perspective.

Houston lacks grandeur of New York life

(09/25/09 12:00am)

There are some things a New Yorker inherently misses when transplanted thousands of miles from home and left to cope in a new college environment. The hectic buzz of a new life chapter - in my case, residing at 1601 Rice Boulevard - seems at once marvelously invigorating and sadly lacking in the comforts of home. After my first month at Rice, I can assuredly say, "Houston, you are not New York."
