Freshman Grace Forbes finished sixth at last weekend’s cross-country NCAA South Central Regional Championships, qualifying for the NCAA championship meet this Saturday, Nov. 23. Both the men’s and women’s cross-country teams placed fifth in their respective races, marking the conclusion of the teams’ seasons.
No. 12 Texas A&M University defeated Rice in swimming 158-102 on Saturday at the Owls’ first home dual meet of the year. The loss was Rice’s first of the season, dropping the team’s record to 3-1.

While many Rice students spend their summer breaks around the world researching, working or spending time with their families, the Rice Owls football team spent the better part of their summer on campus preparing for the upcoming season. With their Aug. 30 season opener against the Army West Point Black Knights fast approaching, the Owls are now in their final stretch of preseason training camp, now with their newly named starting quarterback, redshirt freshman Wiley Green.
Rice men’s basketball’s season ended in an 82-65 first round loss to Marshall University in the Conference USA tournament held in Frisco. The Owls finished the season with a record of 13-19.

While most Rice students spent the weekend enjoying their second Christmas (or third, if you hail from Baker College) of the year at Beer Bike, the members of the Rice baseball team spent their weekend facing Western Kentucky University, dropping two out of three games to the Hilltoppers to fall to 10-16 on the season.
For the fourth straight year, Rice swimming finished second behind Florida International University at the Conference USA Championships. The Owls came away with three C-USA individual championships at this year’s conference championship meet in Atlanta and put up 781 points to finish second only to FIU, which amassed 1,031 points.
Crack! The starter’s pistol goes off and Rice’s track and field stars are off to the races. Last weekend, the Owls competed in their second meet of the year, the Houston Invitational, hosted by the University of Houston.
Earlier this month, a single piece of white printer paper appeared on the facade of an empty storefront in Rice Village, taped to the glass storefront with four plain blue pieces of painter’s tape. On the paper were a few simple words scrawled in black sharpie: Rice University Athletics Store.
Screaming fans, sweat-stained jerseys and leather pigskins. There was some serious football played this past weekend, not just at Rice Stadium. Powderpuff playoffs began this week with Martel College facing Duncan College and Will Rice College facing Lovett College in the quarterfinals.
So close, but so far. Rice held only a three-point deficit going into halftime of its conference matchup game against the University of Texas at San Antonio, but, due to untimely miscues in the second half, came up short in their 20-7 loss to the Roadrunners. The Owls fell to 1-6 overall and 1-2 in Conference USA play after their loss on Saturday.
Twenty-three straight seasons. That’s how many years Rice baseball has made it into the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament. The last time the Owls missed the postseason, nearly all current Rice undergraduates weren’t even alive. The streak looked doomed last year before the Owls won 18 of their final 22 regular season games to win the conference title and qualify for the tournament again. This year’s crop of Rice baseball players will try and extend that decades-long streak for one more year.
Two hundred and fifty wins. Head coach Genny Volpe reached this milestone in the second match of the Rice Volleyball team’s Adidas Invitational II with a 3-1 victory over Georgetown University. When asked about the accomplishment, though, Volpe said her players and assistant coaches deserved the credit.
