Anthony Rendon has been an unyielding force in the Rice lineup this season. He has started all 30 games, often batting clean-up in the lineup. He has played a solid third base, filling the wide gap left by junior Diego Seastrunk, who moved to catcher after Adam Zornes (Baker '08) was drafted last June. He leads the Owls in seven statistical categories, and he ranks second in four more. The freshman arrived on the scene this season as a fresh, local product of Lamar High School, singled in his first career at-bat in Rice's opening win against California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, Calif., and has not looked back since.

Pitching and hitting woes plagued the Owls Tuesday night, and under the watchful eye of former president George H.W. Bush and his wife Barbara, the second-ranked Owls fell 7-3 to unranked Texas A&M.Sophomore Travis Wright got the ball for the 25-9 Owls and only lasted one inning, giving up one run on two hits. Rice immediately got that one back in the bottom of the frame, when a double by freshman third baseman Anthony Rendon scored Holt. Both players finished the night with a team-high three hits.

Over the last nine-game homestand, the men's baseball team proved it could play without its top two aces, juniors Ryan Berry and Mike Ojala, who are still out with arm troubles. Actually, the Owls (22- 7, 7-2 Conference USA) did more than play: The team went 8-1 and won two weekend series against C-USA rivals, taking two of three from the University of Memphis and swept Tulane University. Those conference series were interspersed with wins over Dallas Baptist University and Sam Houston State University. With this record, Rice is sporting its best start since 2004. The Owls have jumped up in the rankings, as well, with five different polls putting Rice in the top six. Baseball America ranks Rice third, while Rivals.com has them in first. Rice is also holding down second place in the C-USA standings, a game behind East Carolina University.

Although Rice outdid Memphis in the hit column-17 to 14-the Owls fell short to the Tigers, dropping the first game of a three-game conference series 10-7 Friday evening at Reckling.Trouble started early for the 15-7 Owls, currently ranked second by Rivals.com and fourth by Baseball America. The Tigers scored two runs in each of the first three innings, while the Owls were only able to put up single digits.

Freshman Matthew Reckling got the start in the rubber game of Rice's conference series against Memphis this weekend. After a loss on Friday and a win on Saturday, the Owls came out on top Sunday 9-5 to take the series, improving their record to 17-7 (4-2).Reckling threw a career-high 5.1 innings and also notched the first win of his Rice career. He had a no-hitter through three innings and didn't allow Memphis to score until a solo home run by junior Shawn Ablett to lead off the fifth.

Rice must have still been on a run-scoring high from last Wednesday's thrilling comeback against Dallas Baptist, for the team opened with a bang against conference rival Tulane in the opener of a three-game series Friday night. The 19-7 (5-2) Owls are ranked as high as second by Rivals.com and fourth by Baseball America. The offense lately has been rolling: in nine of Rice's last 11 games, they have had at least 13 hits. The magic number tonight was 15 hits, which the Owls used to top Tulane 11-3.

The third-ranked Owls finished up a nine-game homestand Tuesday night with a 9-3 win over Sam Houston State University. The Owls currently sit at 22-7 (7-2 Conference USA) and are second in the C-USA standings behind East Carolina University, which they face this weekend on the road. Although it may seem like just yesterday that he was collecting a trophy for 700 wins, Head Coach Wayne Graham will soon have more hardware lining his mantelpiece. With the baseball team's 4-3 road win over the University of Southern Mississippi last Friday, Graham collected his 800th win of his coaching career, a mark rarely seen in college athletics. This mark was but one of numerous highlights for the fourth-ranked Owls (15-6, 2-1 Conference USA) last week. After blitzing the University of Houston 8-1, Rice took two of three against Southern Miss (13-9, 1-2 C-USA) before taking on Lamar University on Tuesday. The contest started sloppily, but the finish of the contest against the Cardinals (16-8) was well worth the price of admission. The Owls' 12-inning, 9-8 win at Reckling Park was an appropriately exciting start to their nine-game homestand.

The way the baseball team has been playing, Omaha is looking a lot closer. The Owls (12-5) finished their seven-game homestand Tuesday night with a 6-3 victory over the University of Texas, ranked tops in the nation, according to Baseball America. On this homestand Rice, currently ranked seventh, also competed in the Academy Sports & Outdoors Rice Classic, followed by a series against the unranked University of San Diego last weekend.

Two freshman starting pitchers-Texas's Austin Dicharry of Klein Collins High School and Rice's Matthew Reckling of Kinkaid-went to high school less than 20 miles from one another in the Houston area but ended up facing each other last Tuesday night. Fourth-ranked Rice took on longtime rival University of Texas, which, according to Baseball America, is the best team in the nation.

Though there was cause for concern when the baseball team came back from California with only one win from their opening three-game set, history should have warned us otherwise. In both 2007 and 2008, the Owls started 1-2, but earned a College World Series berth in Omaha, Neb. Now, it is too early to tell if another Omaha appearance is in the cards, but there is certainly something to be said for history repeating itself, as No. 10 Rice thumped the visiting University of Houston 9-2 on Wednesday night at Reckling Park.

In Friday's game at Minute Maid Park, the starting second baseman for the home team (number seven) led off the bottom of the first inning with a double that hugged the foul line and rattled in the left field corner. But this team was not the 2007 Astros and the player was not Craig Biggio. Rather, it was junior Brock Holt and the 2009 Rice Owls playing UCLA in the annual Houston College Classic Tournament. Despite getting outhit 14-9, Rice came out on top in the tenth inning.

The first baseball home game at Reckling Park against the University of Houston opened with a bang. UH's Blake Kelso started off the game with a double, which he unsuccessfully tried to stretch to a triple. After another hit and a passed ball, Zak Presley scored the first run for the Cougars when Chase Dempsay hit a double but was again thrown out at third.Contrary to UH, the Owls used aggressive baserunning in their favor in the bottom of the second. Freshman Anthony Rendon singled, then moved to third on senior Jess Buenger's single. Freshman Jeremy Rathjen added to the montage of hits and scored Rendon for Rice's first run. After Rathjen stole second, Buenger scored on a groundout by senior Jimmy Comerota, and then Rathjen scored on a wild pitch. Later, in the bottom of the third, sophomore Rick Hague hit a solo shot to put Rice up 4-0.

It is funny how quickly members of the Rice community get greedy. Though the memories of the Owls winning the College World Series in 2003 - Rice's only national championship in any sport-are still relatively fresh, this team is itching to reach the CWS for the fourth year in a row and end what seems like an eternal five-year championship drought. Though fall ball numbers can be deceptive, they have been nevertheless encouraging for the 2009 season. After four exhibition games, the Owls emerged with a clean slate. They opened the fall season with an 8-4 win over Texas State University, then beat the fourth-ranked University of Texas 13-6 twice and capped off the preseason with a 21-2 trumping of McNeese State University.

For the first time in decades, the football team won a game that meant more than just an extra mark in the win column. For the seniors on the team, it was the culmination of years of work, a final chance to step on the field with their brothers-in-arms to show the nation what they were capable of achieving. //

The football team's senior class was honored before the Owls' final regular season matchup against The University of Houston on Saturday. As they stood before a record crowd of over 35,000 fans, the players were faced with one final chance to capture the Bayou Bucket, one of the few previous historic imprints the squad had been unable to make. After one of the most meaningful Bayou Buckets in recent history, the bowl-bound Owls crossed that accomplishment off the to-do list. For the first time in four years, Rice brought home the trophy with a convincing 56-42 win over their cross-town rivals.

The football team turned its bowl eligibility into a cemented bowl berth last Saturday with a 38-31 homecoming win over Army at Rice Stadium. The victory improved the Owls' record to 7-3, which ensures that they will play in a bowl game for the second time in three years. The team also set a new single-season Rice scoring record. "It used to be that when we got a win we were excited," senior quarterback and Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week Chase Clement said. "We're striving for so much more. We have such a talented team. We've done so much, we've come so far that just winning isn't enough. We want to get better so we can continue to win."

The baseball team finished the exhibition season undefeated and with a combined batting average of .348 over the four 14-inning games. The Owls' 21-2 win over McNeese State University last Saturday at Reckling Park was the last in a series of two wins over the University of Texas and one over Texas State University.New players continued performing well during this exhibition, as junior Brock Holt, freshman Anthony Rendon, junior Steven Sultzbaugh and freshman Jeremy Rathjen each had three hits. The offensive star of the day, however, was junior Jimmy Comerota. His seven hits and five RBI included one home run and a stolen base. The other Owls who collected multiple hits were freshman Dave Peterson and sophomore Michael Fuda, who had three and four RBI, respectively.

The football team continued its pursuit of a bowl game with a 42-17 conference win over Tulane last Saturday at the Louisiana Superdome. The Owls won their second game in a row to improve their record to 5-3, 4-1 in conference. Rice needs to win at least one of its next four games to be eligible for a bowl bid, which would be the team's second in three years. Jumping out to a 35-0 lead by halftime, the Owls started firing early against the Green Wave with three touchdowns in the first quarter and two more in the second. Senior quarterback Chase Clement threw two touchdowns to sophomore wide receiver James Casey, one for seven yards and the other for 17, and accumulated two more himself with nine-and six-yard runs.
