Five Rice seniors are cleaning up the air on METRO buses with the product of their senior design project. Joseph Spinella (Brown '12), Jerry Lue (Brown '12), Sundeep Mandava (Brown '12), Shidong Chen (Brown '12) and Grace Ching (Duncan '12) created FluProof, a system that rids the air on public transportation of harmful pathogens that could cause tuberculosis, influenza and pneumonia.

William Howell, adjunct professor of psychology and department chair from 1970 to 1987, died in his Phoenix home on April 14, according to a Rice News and Media release. He was 79.

Rice University is adding one more building to its landscape. At its March 22 meeting, the board of trustees approved a proposal for a new School of Social Sciences building, funded by a $25 million donation from Rice alumnus Robert Klein. The Robert A. Klein Hall for Social Sciences will be located across the Inner Loop from the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy and is planned to house all social science departments except psychology. A construction start date has not been decided.

If the Lorax really could speak for the trees, he would have nothing but praise for the Rice campus. That's because Rice was named a 2011 "Tree Campus USA" by the Arbor Day Foundation. Rice will celebrate its recognition as a Tree Campus USA during a ceremony on April 14 as part of UnConvention, Rice's campus-wide open house.

This week, Rice University joined universities all over the country in participating in National Engineers Week, a week dedicated to celebrating accomplishments in engineering fields. National Engineers Week also aims to get more students interested in careers in engineering. Presented at Rice by Dean of Engineering Ned Thomas and Rice Engineering Alumni, the weeklong event offered panels, study breaks and a student design competition.

The Lifetime Physical Activity Program graduation requirement may soon be changing. In response to student concerns about wait-listing and difficulties registering for LPAP classes, the Student Association is evaluating the current LPAP requirement and considering changes to improve the program.

Starting next fall, any ambiguity about course requirements will be cleared up on the first day of classes. The Faculty Senate recently passed a resolution presented by the Student Association and endorsed by the University Committee on Undergraduate Curriculum that will require faculty to provide a syllabus to students on the first day of classes.

This August, Rachel Carlson (Martel '11) will be traveling overseas for postgraduate education thanks to the George Mitchell Scholarship. Out of 300 applicants, Carlson was one of 12 chosen to receive the scholarship for the 2012- 2013 academic year. She will study at Trinity College Dublin where she will pursue an master's in Environment and Development.

As each year draws to a close, Time Magazine selects the men and women whom they believe have made a significant impact in the world for their "People Who Mattered" list. This year, Virginia Moyer (Jones '74) was chosen for her work as chairwoman of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and her counterintuitive recommendation against routine prostate cancer screening.

Next fall, the humanities department plans to undertake a new research initiative called Rice Seminars, during which a small group of faculty and students will meet to discuss pre-specified topics in an effort to link Rice to the community.

While many Rice students are still trying to avoid the "Freshman 15," one student is going above and beyond to promote healthy eating habits. Rice Health Advisor and Jones College junior Chris Keller is introducing a new initiative in nutrition called Eat the Rainbow, which encourages students to incorporate foods of every color of the rainbow into their diet.

Foreign languages at Rice are getting a makeover. Because Rice students are behind in language study compared with other universities, 100-level language courses will now meet for five hours per week instead of three.

Students looking for an after-dinner snack just got another option. For the week of Oct. 2-8, RechargeU, the campus convenience store located in the Rice Memorial Center, is extending its hours for a trial "Student Hours Week."
