Student air purifiers at work on the METRO

Five Rice seniors are cleaning up the air on METRO buses with the product of their senior design project. Joseph Spinella (Brown '12), Jerry Lue (Brown '12), Sundeep Mandava (Brown '12), Shidong Chen (Brown '12) and Grace Ching (Duncan '12) created FluProof, a system that rids the air on public transportation of harmful pathogens that could cause tuberculosis, influenza and pneumonia.








$25 million for social science building

Rice University is adding one more building to its landscape. At its March 22 meeting, the board of trustees approved a proposal for a new School of Social Sciences building, funded by a $25 million donation from Rice alumnus Robert Klein. The Robert A. Klein Hall for Social Sciences will be located across the Inner Loop from the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy and is planned to house all social science departments except psychology. A construction start date has not been decided.




Engineer week celebrated

This week, Rice University joined universities all over the country in participating in National Engineers Week, a week dedicated to celebrating accomplishments in engineering fields. National Engineers Week also aims to get more students interested in careers in engineering. Presented at Rice by Dean of Engineering Ned Thomas and Rice Engineering Alumni, the weeklong event offered panels, study breaks and a student design competition.





Rice alumna Moyer honored by Time Magazine

As each year draws to a close, Time Magazine selects the men and women whom they believe have made a significant impact in the world for their "People Who Mattered" list. This year, Virginia Moyer (Jones '74) was chosen for her work as chairwoman of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and her counterintuitive recommendation against routine prostate cancer screening.




Jones junior combines food and color palettes

While many Rice students are still trying to avoid the "Freshman 15," one student is going above and beyond to promote healthy eating habits. Rice Health Advisor and Jones College junior Chris Keller is introducing a new initiative in nutrition called Eat the Rainbow, which encourages students to incorporate foods of every color of the rainbow into their diet.
