Women's track set for postseason competition

(05/16/08 12:00am)

This season, the women's track and field team set a bevy of personal and career individual bests. Together, however, they recorded an even more important team accomplishment: The largest number of post-season qualifiers in school history. After last weekend's action, the Owls now have 14 members with regional qualifying marks and one with a national meet invitation. The next competition for the Owls will be this weekend at the Conference USA Outdoor Championships in El Paso, Texas. Following that will be regional competition in Lincoln, Neb. May 30-31 and the NCAA National Championships in Des Moines, Iowa June 11-14. After winning the C-USA Indoor Championship in March, the Owls have a good chance to take both titles with a first-place finish in El Paso. With more regional qualifiers than any other school in C-USA this season, the Owls come in as the squad to beat.

Walwyn sets personal-best in 100

(04/18/08 12:00am)

The University of Texas-El Paso Invitational is traditionally known to be a prime meet for setting personal bests and record-breaking times. Last weekend, senior Desarie Walwyn met the first and nearly the second of these goals in the 100-meter dash; her 11.45 second finish is the third-fastest time in Rice women's track and field history. The scorching time set the pace for the Owls, who grabbed first place finishes in four separate events.Walwyn's distance-running teammates, who did not attend last week's meet, will make attempts at personal-bests of their own this weekend. Seniors Marisa Daniels and Callie Wells, sophomore Nicole Mericle and freshmen Allison Pye and Becky Wade will travel to Walnut, Calif., to compete in the Mt. Sac Invitational today and tomorrow, where each will take the opportunity to try to post qualifying times for regionals and nationals. The rest of the squad will run in the Texas Invitational in Austin tomorrow against six other schools, including Texas State University, University of Texas-San Antonio and the University of Texas.

With Oympic Trials approaching, Greff's vault lands her top spot in nation

(04/11/08 12:00am)

While recent worldwide newspapers indicate that many people could boycott the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, there is at least one member of the women's track team who may be in China to see them firsthand. Senior Rachel Greff's vault of 13 feet, 9.25 inches, at the Texas Relays in Austin last weekend was high enough to qualify for the Olympic Trials with a B-level ranking. With the same jump, Greff also moved to the top of the NCAA standings with a little over a month to go until the Conference USA meet.Along with Rice's other throwers, jumpers and sprinters, Greff will now travel to El Paso for the University of Texas-El Paso Invitational this weekend. Head coach Jim Bevan said the fast track, warm weather and high altitude could provide for personal-best performances.

Women's track continues success at TSU Relays

(03/28/08 12:00am)

The downside of reaching the top is that, theoretically, there is no room for improvement. Nevertheless, as the outdoor season commences, the women's track and field team will be looking to improve on its early-season finish: first place at the Conference USA Indoor Championships.Rice's first attempt at improvement took place last weekend at the Texas Southern University Relays on the University of Houston campus, where the Owls earned no fewer than four first-place finishes. Senior Desarie Walwyn and junior Jenny Glover both posted NCAA-regional qualifying times in the 100 meter dash and triple jump, respectively.

Women's track uses potent team effort to defend indoor title

(03/14/08 12:00am)

Even though track and field is not always recognized as a conventional team sport, the members of the women's track and field team were anything but individualistic in defending their league title two weeks ago at the Conference USA Indoor Championships. Despite placing first in only two events, Rice used 15 top-three finishes to pull out a nearly twenty-point rout to best second -lace University of Texas-El Paso 133.5-114.5 at University of Houston's Yeoman Field House. The Owls will get a chance to rest this week - none of the members earned a spot in the NCAA Indoor Championships. However, more Owls were on the provisional list than in previous years: Senior distance runners Callie Wells and Lennie Waite, senior pole vaulter Rachel Greff, senior sprinter Desarie Walwyn and sophomore Sarah Lyons all posted provisional qualifying times during the season.
