The golf team fought heavy winds to post a sixth-place finish at the Louisiana Tech University Bulldog Classic on Tuesday. While the finish represents an improvement over the team's performance at the Border Olympics last week, it left the Owls hungry for the upcoming University of Arkansas-Little Rock First Tee Collegiate Classic in two weeks. Rice opened the first round of play at Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant, La. with a cumulative score of 306, putting them in sixth place. Senior Michael Buttacavoli and junior Michael Whitehead paced the Owls with a pair of three-over 75s. Senior Christopher Brown and freshman Jade Scott both shot six-over 78.

With two spring tournaments under its belt, the golf team entered the Border Olympics with high hopes. A solid first round only reinforced the team's confidence, but the wheels fell off Rice's performance after that, leading to a disappointing 12th-place finish.Freshman Jade Scott, one of two Rice golfers to have won an individual title this season, led the Owls with an opening round 70. Junior Michael Whitehead and senior Michael Buttacavoli were not far behind, posting 71 and 72, respectively. Combined with senior Christopher Brown's 75, the Owls' score of 288 put them one shot back of the University of Arkansas.

The golf team's plans for a second-consecutive victory were thwarted by the weather-induced cancellation of the third round of the JL Lewis Intercollegiate, leading to the team's second-place finish at the event. A poor first round was followed by a terrific comeback in the second round, but tournament organizers prevented the Owls from rising to the top of the leaderboard. Rice opened the JL Lewis Intercollegiate, held at Bandit Golf Course and hosted by Texas State University, by firing a cumulative score of 304 (+20). Despite the high score, the Owls still ended the round in a tie for third place.

After concluding the fall with a heartbreaking loss that saw it lose its lead after two rounds, the golf team was placed in a similar situation at the Rice Intercollegiate Monday. This time, though, the Owls refused to let history repeat itself. The Owls, led by senior Christopher Brown's final round 69 - a score that gave him the individual title - dominated Tuesday's final round to win their second tournament title of the 2009-'10 season. Windy, cold conditions controlled Monday's 36-hole day, and senior Christopher Brown jumped out to an eight-stroke lead over the 15-team, 81-golfer field at the Westwood Golf Club. Brown eventually won the individual title, helped largely by his final round 69. Back-to-back rounds of 297 (+9) were enough to put the Owls on top of the leaderboard, as the 14 visiting schools had difficulty navigating Westwood.

And so the road to the Final Four begins. The volleyball team booked its second-straight ticket to the NCAA Tournament with a victory over the University of Tulsa in the Conference USA Championship final Nov. 22. A victory over then-17th-ranked Louisiana State University Friday evening was the icing on the cake for a regular season that ended just the way the team hoped.

This weekend, the C-USA volleyball tournament will be hosted at Tudor Fieldhouse. Tulane has been a conference powerhouse in past years, but this season, Southern Miss has emerged as the strongest squad. 1. University of Southern Mississippi (25-4, 14-2 C-USA): The Golden Eagles enter the tournament as the obvious favorite, having won 14 matches in a row. Southern Miss has experienced a resurgence of their program and has been led by seniors Angela Hlavaty and Maia Ivanova.

The pomp and circumstance for the seniors last weekend could have ended with the flowers. It could have ended with the pre-game standing ovations, or with the hugs from family members, or the memories of four years past. Instead, it ended with a near-effortless 3-0 victory over the University of Houston, which, all things considered, was perhaps the best way to send off one of the strongest senior classes Rice has seen in recent memory.

The volleyball team capped off a terrific three-day run through the Conference-USA tournament with a dramatic victory over second-seeded Tulsa. The win gave the Owls an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament, their second consecutive appearance in the 64-team tournament.Rice entered Sunday's tournament finale on a season-high seven-match winning streak, including their first two matches of the C-USA Tournament, which was hosted by the Owls at Tudor Fieldhouse. Rice defeated Marshall in three sets on Friday evening before taking out top-seeded Southern Miss on Saturday evening. The Golden Eagles entered their match against Rice on a fifteen-match winning streak, but Rice proved too hot for the tournament favorite. That victory set up Rice's matchup with Tulsa in front of a loud crowd at Tudor.

The volleyball team's biggest victory of the season occurred last Friday, and it heralded the end of a multi-season losing streak against conference opponent Tulane University. The Owls (18-8, 10-5 Conference USA) then followed up that win with a defeat of University of Texas-El Paso Sunday afternoon that extended their winning streak to four matches in a row. Rice entered Friday's match in New Orleans without a win over Tulane (16-8, 11-4 C-USA) since 2005, and had weathered a three-set loss to the Green Wave earlier this season at Tudor Fieldhouse. The Owls knew a victory at Fogelman Arena would be no easy task - the Green Wave were 6-2 at home entering the game. However, the Owls emerged from the match with a three-set victory, 26-24, 25-23, 25-19.

At the David Toms Intercollegiate three weeks ago, freshman golfer Jade Scott was hot. Really hot. Five-birdies-in-a-row hot. The kind of hot that Tiger Woods and only a handful of others know, the kind that is seen only rarely in a college tournament. The kind of hot that is almost never seen in Rice gear. It was only his fourth collegiate event, and Scott was cruising, somewhere deep under par. Two rounds of 67 (-5) and 72 (+1) had left him tied for eighth place in the field of 75, but a rapid-fire string of birdies to start the third and final round shot him up the leaderboard.

The volleyball team kicked off the weekend with a victory over East Carolina University to end a three-game losing streak and concluded it with a big win over Marshall University, giving the team its first 2-0 weekend since late September. Rice (16-8, 8-5 Conference USA) opened its weekend Friday evening against a struggling ECU (9-16, 2-11 C-USA) squad that has managed two paltry wins on the year. The Owls took care of business handily, dispatching their opponents in the minimum three sets (25-19, 25-17, 25-17).

The volleyball team has struggled all season with closing out matches, and this weekend was no different. Difficult losses on the road to conference foes Southern Methodist University and the University of Tulsa dealt a crushing blow to the Owls' goal of a conference championship. Rice traveled to Dallas to take on SMU (17-7, 7-3 Conference USA) Friday evening, a team the Owls defeated in four sets at Tudor Fieldhouse just a few weeks ago. Yet this match had a vastly different result, as the Mustangs downed Rice (14-8, 6-5 C-USA) in a five-set match (25-23, 21-25, 19-25, 25-22, 15-7).

The golf team's run was impressive, recording their first victory since Head Coach Drew Scott was still in school while also finishing fourth at the Squire Creek Invitational.But the run, it appears, is over. With a disappointing ninth-place finish at this past weekend's Lone Star Invitational, the Owls must now look up and down the roster to determine whether or not their hot start was a once-in-a-decade fluke or if their recent falter was just a stumble on the ascent toward respectability.

With their goal of winning Conference USA in mind, the volleyball team entered the weekend looking for two victories to put them near the top of the conference standings. Instead, a five-set loss to the University of Southern Mississippi left the Owls in need of some help if they are to attain a conference championship. Rice (14-6, 6-3 C-USA) enters this weekend again needing a pair of victories to keep alive their hopes of winning C-USA. The Owls will travel to Dallas to take on Southern Methodist University, currently fifth in the conference, this evening. The Owls downed the Mustangs (15-7, 5-3 C-USA) in three sets earlier this season. The team will then head to Tulsa, Okla., to face off against the University of Tulsa. The Owls dropped a home match against the Golden Hurricane (17-5, 6-2 C-USA) two weeks ago and will look for better execution this time around to defeat C-USA's third-place team.

Since the opening round of the 2005 Conference USA tournament, the volleyball team has had a score to settle with Tulane University. In 2005, Rice swept Tulane 3-0 in both regular-season matches. However, come conference time, the Green Wave pulled out a five-set win over the Owls, knocking Rice out of its first C-USA tournament.

The golf team continued its impressive play to start the 2009 season, recording a fourth-place finish at the Squire Creek Invitational this past Monday and Tuesday following the team's first tournament victory since 1997 at the UTA Waterchase Invitational two weeks ago. While the team posted a first-round score that fell below their expectations, the Owls bounced back with back-to-back rounds of even or under par. With Squire Creek behind them, the team now focuses their attention on the Lone Star Shootout, held October 18-19. The event, hosted by UT-San Antonio, will contain 12 of Texas' strongest teams, and will present the strongest field Rice has faced thus far this year. The tournament, which takes place at Briggs Ranch Golf Course, will give Rice a great opportunity to defeat some highly-ranked schools.

The volleyball team entered the season with the self-proclaimed goal of winning Conference USA. With two victories in their first two conference matches last weekend, the Owls (10-3, 2-0 C-USA) may very well be on their way to the C-USA crown, something the program has never accomplished. Rice continues conference play tonight when it hosts the University of Texas-El Paso at Tudor Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. UTEP currently sports a 9-7 record and swept their first two conference games last weekend, beating the University of Tulsa (10-5, 0-2 C-USA) and Southern Methodist University (10-6, 0-2 C-USA). The Owls will then take on Tulane University on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., also at Tudor. Rice has not had much success in recent years against Tulane (7-4, 3-0 C-USA), as it has not defeated the Green Wave since 2005.

The golf team got the season off to a hot start this Monday and Tuesday at the UTA Waterchase Invitational, scorching the field of 19 while notching their first tournament win since Head Coach Drew Scott (Wiess '98) was in school. The Owls took the invitational by two strokes over the host school, the University of Texas at Arlington, shooting a final round 286 (-2). Rice's cumulative score was 858, putting them six strokes under par for the three-round tournament.

The volleyball team was looking forward to the opportunity to face second-ranked University of Washington last week, but an influenza outbreak forced the Owls (8-3) to cancel their trip to San Antonio and abandon their chance at taking on the Huskies. Rice will restart play on Friday evening's road match against the University of Memphis in their Conference USA opener. Rice defeated Memphis (2-12) in three sets in their only match last year, which took place at Fox Gym . Memphis should not present much difficulty, as the Tigers have won only two of their first 14 games. The Owls continue play on Sunday afternoon against the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Rice and UAB (7-8) played a five-set thriller last year at Fox Gym, with the Owls emerging victorious. Though UAB made the NCAA Tournament last year, the team lost its core group of seniors and have opened this year with a mediocre showing.

If there were ever an inopportune time for the flu to hammer the volleyball team during the first half of the season, last weekend's Mizuno Invitational II was it. With numerous members battling the disease - including Jenn McClean, who was forced to leave midway through the tournament - the Owls (8-3) dropped a pair of matches to undefeated University of South Carolina and nationally-ranked Wichita State. Still, the week was not a total wash, as the Owls split their two defeats with a victory over Harvard University.
