Online only: Defending champs rebound from Week 1 loss

(09/24/10 12:00am)

For the second straight weekend, the slate of powderpuff games was decimated by weather conditions and game cancellations, leaving just two games played. The more appealing match-up was the game between Will Rice College and Duncan College, two teams on opposite ends of Week 1 upsets. Duncan, in their first season as an independent powderpuff squad, defeated Jones College in overtime in the season's inaugural game, while the defending champions from Will Rice allowed 34 points in a loss to Lovett College. The Thresher's Game of the Week lived up to expectations on Sunday afternoon, needing overtime to separate the two teams for the second straight week. Will Rice bounced back from their season-opening loss, taking a 21-14 game from Duncan to even their record at 1-1 on the year.Game of the Week

Powderpuff begins with shock and excitement

(09/17/10 12:00am)

While many were focused on watching college football or preparing to "get their rox off " at Lovett College last Saturday, the long-awaited kickoff of the 2010 powderpuff season took place at Field 7, with Duncan College opening against Jones College on Friday night. However, the main tussle of the week belonged to Wiess and Baker Colleges. Game of the Week: Baker 13, Wiess 7

Owls trample Thundering Herd, stand atop C-USA

(05/17/10 12:00am)

With just two weeks remaining in the regular season, the baseball team found themselves in first place in the Conference USA standings. The Owls (30-17, 11-4 C-USA) would travel to West Virginia to take on Marshall University, a team sitting just two-and-a half games back in C-USA rankings. Needless to say, the impending road conference challenge would provide a significant test for Rice. And after splitting the series' first two games, the Owls prevailed in the rubber match to take the series and expand their conference lead.

Baseball out-jousts Knights

(04/23/10 12:00am)

Since dropping two of three games at Memphis at the start of its Conference USA slate, the baseball team has gone 5-1 in consecutive series against C-USA foes to take possession of first place in the standings. Entering the weekend, the team threatening Rice's position atop the conference was the University of Central Florida, a dominant offensive team carrying momentum into the weekend after sweeping the University of Southern Mississippi. As fate would have it, the Owls (23-16, 8-4 C-USA) and Knights (25-14, 6-6 C-USA) faced off this past weekend in Orlando for three crucial games, as the conference schedule nears its halfway point.

Owls down Houston, claw way to conference tops

(04/09/10 12:00am)

As the calendar turns to April and school's end comes into sight, the schedule is just heating up for the baseball team. At the midway point of the regular season, all concentration shifts to the conference schedule, as Conference USA foes become the focus of the squad's attention. Conference play began slowly for the Owls (17-13) two weeks ago at the University of Memphis, as Rice dropped the first two games of the weekend series to the Tigers (13-16). But in the tail end of a Saturday doubleheader, the Owls' offense erupted for 13 runs as Rice cruised to an easy 13-4 win to salvage the final game of the series.

Wednesday's Sports Update : Baseball blows by Islanders 23-1

(04/09/10 12:00am)

The Rice Owls were firing on all cylinders on Wednesday evening at Reckling Park, as an overwhelming offensive attack and sound pitching delivered a 23-1 victory in seven innings over the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi University. The Owls (21-14) jumped on the Islanders' (13-21) pitchers early when sophomore Jeremy Rathjen drove a three-run home run over the left field fence in the first inning. The first seven batters of the game would reach base for Rice as the Owls scored seven runs on six hits in the inning. Freshman Michael Ratterree drove in two runs with a double in the second to extend the lead to 9-0 for starting pitcher Anthony Fazio. In the third inning, eight straight Rice batters would reach base as the Owls plated eight runs on seven hits. Rathjen drove in two more runs on a double while senior Jimmy Comerota's single also brought in two. The Owls scored seventeen runs on sixteen hits in just the game's first three innings, as Fazio worked through the Islanders' lineup.

Baseball bested by San Diego twice, Texas once

(03/26/10 12:00am)

The baseball team traveled to the University of San Diego this past weekend in hopes of extending its three-game winning streak. But the Owls (12-10) were unable to continue their winning ways, dropping the first two games before winning the finale thanks to a late-inning rally on Sunday. However, the biggest result of the week for Rice cannot be found in the standings. Senior pitcher Mike Ojala made a successful pitching return on Friday afternoon, almost exactly nine months after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow.

Commentary: Making sense of the remaining madness

(03/26/10 12:00am)

With the shock of last weekend's upsets wearing off, it's time to look forward to the remaining games in this year's NCAA Tournament. Throw out your brackets and enjoy the final weeks of college hoops. The Sweet 16 will have its own share of excitement. Enjoy these expected bests: Kentucky will come out on top as the best team of the Sweet 16. A mirror image of the 2008 runners-up, this team has better talent and athleticism than does any other team in the field. John Wall and Eric Bledsoe make up the most athletic backcourt in the country, while DeMarcus Cousins and Patrick Patterson can score inside better than any other duo. With Kansas out, I do not see a team in the field that matches up well against Kentucky. My preseason pick to win it all will be cutting down the nets in Indy in a few weeks.

Owls split weekend with Bears

(03/19/10 12:00am)

After an encouraging weekend at the Houston College Classic and a dominating 8-1 win against rival Sam Houston State last week, the baseball team went back to its inconsistent ways in the first two games of a four-game series against the University of California-Berkeley Golden Bears last weekend. In the opener last Thursday night, Rice ace Taylor Wall struggled against the Cal (9-5) offense, allowing a pair of three-run home runs to put the Owls (11-7) in a 6-0 hole. The Rice bats, silent for the first six innings, rallied late to trim the deficit to two, but a line drive off the bat of junior right fielder Chad Mozingo was caught and resulted in a game-ending double play with a final score of 8-6.

Thursday's Sports Update : California downs baseball team 8-6 to begin weekend four-game series

(03/12/10 12:00am)

The baseball team was unable to dig themselves out of an early hole, falling 8-6 on Thursday night to the home run-happy University of California at Reckling Park Thursday evening. Sophomore Taylor Wall got the start for the Owls (8-6) but surrendered six runs in five and 2/3 innings of work. California (8-3) catcher Chadd Krist hit a line drive over the wall in left field to give the Golden Bears a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Cal offense delivered again in the sixth inning when third baseman Tony Renda took Wall deep, pushing the Golden Bears' lead to 6-0 with their second three-run home run of the game.

Owls' opening weekend dampened by Cardinal rule

(02/26/10 12:00am)

Head Coach Wayne Graham took his team out to Stanford University last weekend in hopes of presenting his squad with a good early-season challenge. But after a disappointing sweep at the hands of the Cardinal (4- 0) and a 13-7 loss to a mediocre Lamar University team, Graham is suddenly the one facing a number of challenges. Following a weekend of poor starting pitching, inconsistent offense and shaky defense, the Owls (0-4) are off to their worst start since 2000. The Owls' season opener started with a bang, but the success for Rice was short-lived. In the first at-bat of the season, freshman second baseman Mike Ratterree drove a 3-1 offering over the left field fence, giving the Owls the early 1-0 lead.

First step to Omaha slated to begin with eager yet untested Ratterree

(02/19/10 12:00am)

Today, in Palo Alto, Calif., the baseball team will embark on what promises to be a long and exciting 2010 campaign whose success will once again be defined by the program's characteristically high ambitions. And when the first pitch is thrown at Sunken Diamond stadium at 5:30 p.m. PST, it will be on Rice freshman Mike Ratterree's shoulders to start the season off on the right foot. Not that there's an exorbitant amount of concern with the freshman taking the first pitch. Ratterree is, after all, a highly touted second baseman, having earned Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association Player of the Year honors while a two-sport star of Houston's Memorial High School. And while the humble Ratterree will be the last one to tell you of his numerous baseball accolades, there is no suppressing his excitement about the upcoming season.

Baseball 2010: The Climb

(02/19/10 12:00am)

When evaluating the legacy of legendary Rice University baseball coach Wayne Graham, it is easy to pinpoint a few accomplishments as the most telling of the coach's career. Under Graham's guidance in 1995, the Owls qualified for their first NCAA Tournament in school history, the first of 15 straight NCAA appearances for Rice. In 2003, Rice captured its first-ever National Championship in the most successful, storied season in the program's entire history. But a date that flies under the radar in defining Graham's legacy is June 7, 2004, the date of the Major League Baseball's annual amateur draft. On that day, Rice alums Philip Humber (third selection overall), Jeff Niemann (fourth) and Wade Townsend (eighth) made MLB draft history by becoming the first trio of college teammates to be selected within the first 10 picks of the draft. That record still stands and is as good a testament as any to the baseball acumen Graham holds.

McWill bullies past Sid to clinch place in postseason

(11/13/09 12:00am)

Entering the final weekend of the regular season, the powderpuff playoff bracket was anything but set. Martel College and Jones College were virtual locks with just one game to play, but the final two spots were still up for grabs among four teams. Both Wiess College and Baker College-Duncan College would have to win out and get some help from a few other teams, while Sid Richardson College and Will Rice College-McMurtry College held their playoff destiny in their own hands. In a pair of games critical to the playoff scheme, Wiess faced off against Jones while BaDunc and Martel squared off. But the Game of the Week was a Sunday showdown pairing Sid Rich against McWill, with the winner guaranteed a spot in the playoffs.

McWill runs past BaDunc

(11/06/09 12:00am)

The powderpuff playoffs do not begin until a week from Sunday, but one wouldn't know it after watching the past weekend of action. With nine teams vying for four playoff spots, the weekend's slate of games contained a postseason atmosphere as the quality of play reached new levels. Jones College looked to solidify its chances at a playoff berth in its match-up against Brown College, while the game between Sid Richardson College and Martel College provided the most surprising result of the season. But for this week, the spotlight was on the battle between Will Rice College-McMurtry College and Baker College-Duncan College. With each team on the cusp of clinching a spot in the playoffs, the pivotal encounter had major implications for the postseason and, as such, earned Game of the Week honors.

Martel maintains clean record

(10/30/09 12:00am)

With just two weekends remaining in the regular season, one cannot help but look forward to the powderpuff playoffs and potential matchups. But as a number of teams jockey for a spot in the semifinals, the past weekend of powderpuff action simply cannot be overlooked. Brown College had a pair of games to get into the playoff hunt, while Sid Richardson College and Wiess College met for the newest chapter in their historic rivalry. But as for selecting the Game of the Week, the decision was not a difficult one. In a battle of undefeated teams, Jones College faced off against Martel College on Sunday afternoon and the two best teams dueled for powderpuff supremacy in our Game of the Week.
