Sid bounces back with pair of wins

(10/23/09 12:00am)

Following fall break and a weekend washout, powderpuff was set for a full slate of weekend games as the regular season nears the final stretch. And while a few teams seem destined to clinch a spot in the semifinals, there are still plenty of teams in the running to reach the illustrious final four. The Game of the Week highlights two teams who have had up-and-down seasons to this point. Sid Richardson College, a consistent powderpuff force in recent history, suffered a pair of close losses after an opening-game victory. Lovett College, on the other hand, has erased last year's struggles with strong performances on a weekly basis but still has work to do if the team hopes to secure a playoff spot.

Defending champion Martel continues win streak

(10/09/09 12:00am)

Sometimes even the grittiest women must deal with the elements. Of the six scheduled powderpuff games last weekend, Sunday's heavy rain washed out four. But even with a shortage of games, there was still plenty of powderpuff played. Martel College, the defending league champions, entered the weekend at 2-0 coming off a layoff of nearly three weeks. Cast in the spotlight of our Game of the Week, Martel (4-0) faced Will Rice College-McMurtry College as they looked to cement themselves as the favorites to defend their title.

Jones stands undefeated after powderpuff romp

(10/02/09 12:00am)

The past weekend was the time of the year when Rice flexed its muscles, primping the school and putting itself on display for the annual Families Weekend. While the new Barbara and David Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center's opening was spectacular, and the football team's home opener drew some excitement, Week Three of powderpuff football may have stolen the show. With an extended slate of Saturday games on tap, parents watched their daughters battle in the heat during a day of big crowds and big plays. And on Sunday, fans saw a new league power, Jones College, on display. In our Game of the Week, Jones took on the tandem of Will Rice College and McMurtry College in a Sunday night primetime showdown for the finale of Week Three action.

Battlesows start season by downing rival Hanszen

(09/25/09 12:00am)

After a relatively quiet first week, the powderpuff season took flight last weekend with a number of headline match-ups filling the slate. Two teams made their season debuts, as Wiess College took the field for the first time against Hanszen College and the Will Rice College-McMurtry College tandem squad made its season debut in a match-up with Brown College. While the focus of both of these teams was a solid start, it was the finishes that highlighted a highly-entertaining weekend of football. Both Jones College and Lovett College earned memorable victories over the weekend, each in suspenseful and unique fashion. And while the Jones-Sid Richardson College finish was one for the record books, it was not the focus of our Game of the Week. Wiess and Hanszen squared off on Sunday in a rivalry game that needed to play a few extra minutes before a winner was declared.

Powderpuff opens with Sid win, Martel shutouts

(09/18/09 12:00am)

During the long offseason, fans across the Rice campus have resorted to the filler entertainment of professional sports. Thankfully, last weekend provided deprived fans with their wishes: powderpuff. The newest installment of intramural women's flag football officially began last Saturday, but aside from the first use of "tandem teams" - Baker College pairing with Duncan College, Will Rice College pairing with McMurtry College - there were few surprises. Defending champions Martel College shut out both matches of their double-header weekend, but neither of their contests were games of the week. That honor went to the South College Showdown, which saw Sid Richardson College throttle Hanszen College.
