The Rice women’s basketball team has now won nine of its last 10 games after Saturday’s victory over the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. The Owls are 14-3 on the season and 4-1 in Conference USA, tied for second in the conference after Western Kentucky University. With 5.9 seconds left in the Rice men’s basketball season opener, Rice trailed Eastern Kentucky University 73-72. After a timeout, Rice sophomore guard Ako Adams received the ball off the inbound and sprinted down the court. He drove all the way to the basket and got a layup off. No good. Sophomore Tim Harrison grabbed the offensive rebound and tried a putback attempt. Again, no good. The buzzer sounded. Game over. The Owls were 0-1.
The Rice offense has frequently let good defensive performances go to waste in conference play this season. But against the University of Alabama, Birmingham, it was the defense’s turn to let the game get out of hand. The Owls allowed six touchdowns on the way to a 52-21 loss that dropped Rice to 1-8 on the season and 1-4 in Conference USA. The Owls have now lost seven in a row.
The Rice women’s soccer team didn’t finish the regular season with a perfect record in Conference USA play, but it didn’t lose either. Entering the game against the University of North Texas on Oct. 27, the Owls had a perfect conference record with nine wins, no losses and no ties. Rice held a 1-0 lead until the 89th minute before the Mean Green scored to tie the game at 1-1. The Owls were forced to settle for a tie to finish the conference season 9-0-1.
This Rice volleyball season has had no shortage of drama, and the Owls are coming in clutch. The Owls won their eighth five-set match of the year on Sunday at Tudor Fieldhouse, this time over the University of Texas at El Paso. With the win, the team extended its streak to eight in a row.
The Rice soccer team had not lost in a little over a month. That was the storyline heading into the team’s final home game against Middle Tennessee State University on Oct. 13, and the Owls continued that streak with a 4-2 win against the Blue Raiders.

Two hundred and fifty wins. Head coach Genny Volpe reached this milestone in the second match of the Rice Volleyball team’s Adidas Invitational II with a 3-1 victory over Georgetown University. When asked about the accomplishment, though, Volpe said her players and assistant coaches deserved the credit.
