Students will soon be able to easily find out exactly what they need for their major. By early next semester, the Office of the Registrar plans to replace the current degree-auditing tool, ECAPP, with DegreeWorks, a web-based degree-auditing tool that will let students and their major advisors evaluate degree progress.

Rice University student James Ragan died Monday, Feb. 17 at his home in Corpus Christi after a difficult and public seven-year battle with osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, according to an email sent to the Rice community by Dean of Undergraduates John Hutchinson. He was 20 years old.

The James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy has risen in the Think Tanks and Civil Society's Program's 2013 survey rankings, moving to No. 11 from No. 13 among the world's top university-affiliated think tanks. It also rose to No. 5 from No. 6 among the world's energy and resource policy think tanks and to No. 20 from No. 21 among the United States' top think tanks, according to Janice and Robert McNair Director of Public Policy, Ambassador Edward Djerejian.

A group of undergraduate students have brought Camp Kesem, a national program whose chapters at over 50 universities organize a free weeklong summer camp for children of cancer patients, to Rice University. The group hopes to host 30 campers at its inaugural camp, according to Baylor College of Medicine student Vidya Eswaran.

A team of six Rice University undergraduates won the first annual Texas Department of Transportation College Challenge, held Jan. 6-8 in San Antonio at the Ninth Annual Texas Transportation Forum in San Antonio, for developing an expandable bike rack that would attach to buses and allow for more bicyclists to ride public transport, according to the official Texas Department of Transportation website.

The 10 Days program of the Living Water International Project splashed its way to Rice Nov. 10, when students pledged to drink only water for 10 days and donate the money they would have spent on other drinks to help build water wells in five villages in Rwanda's Ruhango district, according to Rice Navigators service event coordinator Becca Buthe.
