Rice celebrates 60th anniversary of JFK moon speech, begins search for mankind’s next steps

Rice and NASA celebrated the official 60th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s moon speech on Sept. 12. Students from both Rice and the Houston independent school district, faculty, NASA officials and federal, state and local officials attended the ceremony. 




DesRoches builds Rice’s senior leadership team

The 2022-2023 school year brings with it not only a new president for Rice University, but also new leadership in other administrative positions. So far this year, the university has introduced five new members of administration: Omar Syed as vice president and general counsel, Paul Cherukuri as vice president of innovation, Ramamoorthy Ramesh as vice president of research, Kelly Fox as vice president of finance and administration and Paul Padley as vice president of information technology and chief information officer. Rice also named Amy Dittmar as the new provost.



Beer Bike 2022: Hanszen wins women's, Jones wins men's, crash raises track safety concerns

In this past Saturday’s Beer Bike races, Hanszen College took first place in the women’s race, followed by Duncan College and Jones College, according to official results from the Rice Program Council 2022 Beer Bike Committee. Jones finished first in men’s, 23 seconds ahead of the Graduate Student Association in second, with Duncan following in third place.




Former Rice football player sentenced to twelve years for death of teammate

Former Rice football player Stuart Mouchantaf has been sentenced to 144 months in federal prison for his role in the death of his former teammate, death of his former teammate, Blain Padgett. His ruling states that Mouchantaf must serve three months of supervised release at the end of his sentence.



SA resolution introduced to address swim coach comments

The Student Association Equity Council introduced a resolution on Feb. 7 denouncing Rice swim coach Seth Huston’s comments after he made statements regarding an NCAA policy change. The NCAA’s new policy states that transgender policies in the sport are now to be determined by the sport’s national governing body, along with commenting on University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas’ right to compete. 




Domingues da Silva awarded NEH grant for Atlantic Slave Trade Archive

Associate professor of history Daniel Domingues da Silva was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for Humanities for his project, the Digital Archive of the Atlantic Slave Trades, on Jan. 12. The Archive was created to provide an online space for documents telling the history of the transportation of slaves  in the Atlantic and North America.


Rice aiming to fill admin vacancies by July 1

The search to fill three prominent vacancies in Rice administration is currently ongoing. General Counsel Richard Zansitis retired at the start of this semester after 21 years in his role. Vice Provost for Research Yousif Shamoo will also be stepping down this month, and Provost Reginald DesRoches will leave his position later this summer to begin his tenure as Rice’s eight president. 






Critical Dialogues on Diversity workshop now required for Class of 2025

All Rice new students are now required to take a new workshop, Critical Dialogues on Diversity. The CDOD course, UNIV 195, will be a five-week, discussion-based workshop that will explore critical approaches to culture, identity and dialogue, according to an email sent to new students by Vice Provost for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Alexander Byrd on Oct. 5.
