Tigers ground Owls' flight

(01/22/10 12:00am)

The men's basketball team's Wednesday loss to Southern Methodist University marked the sixth game of a demoralizing losing streak for the Owls (6-12, 0-5 C-USA). It also marked the fourth game in a row Head Coach Ben Braun has made a bold move in an attempt to fix some intractable, glaring deficiencies. For the last four games, Braun has been starting sophomore guard Nate Schwarze, previously relegated to sparse playing time after taking only six shots last year. But Braun has found a niche that Schwarze can fill despite consistently being the smallest player on the floor.

The Matchbox

(01/22/10 12:00am)

In the courtyard behind Sewall Hall, hidden out of everyday sight, an institution has emerged that has taken a good chunk of the Rice community by storm seemingly overnight. Much like the university itself, it is smaller than any venue of its kind, yet it produces work that ties the informality of a student-run entity with quality and professionalism. But its location makes it clear that the newest addition to the Rice landscape is not a high quality particle accelerator, nor does it have anything to do with the scientific process. Rather, even in these troubling economic times, funding and support from across campus has been rapidly channeled into something entirely different - a student-run art space housed in a former professor's office, now one of the school's hippest destinations.

Owls fall in first C-USA matches

(01/15/10 12:00am)

After delivering mixed performances throughout their non-conference schedule, the Owls have finally arrived at their Conference USA competition. With it comes an opportunity for Head Coach Ben Braun to show the strides or stumbles that the squad has made in the coach's second year at the helm. Since Braun arrived at South Main last fall, the C-USA picture has changed dramatically. The conference, once known for greater girth in the midsection under the domination of the University of Memphis, has suddenly become top-heavy and now appears to be moving up as one of the tougher conferences in the nation.

Wednesday Sports Update: Cross-town rivals defeat Rice

(12/04/09 12:00am)

For the seventh straight time in a row, the Owls were overcome by their cross-town rivals the University of Houston in a 83-66 loss at Tudor Fieldhouse on Wednesday. The match at was Rice's Conference USA opener, a bad omen for coach Ben Braun's squad which is still trying to show signs of improvement from last season.Freshman point guard Tamir Jackson led Rice with 19 points, but only posted three assists and two turnovers, compared to 11 points, ten assists and two turnovers from his Houston counterpart Desmond Wade. The game high 23 points came from Cougar Guard Maurice McNeil who surprised the home team with his offensive outburst and contributed to a dominant 42 points in the paint, compared to Rice's 22.

Longhorns down Owls

(12/04/09 12:00am)

After opening the season with perfection, the men's basketball team has encountered its first taste of defeat in recent weeks. But the Owls' latest struggles, which came at the hands of formidable opponents, have shown the team what works and what needs improvement to help them win consistently. One area where Rice (4-3) has excelled is around the basket. Known for at times being timid underneath the basket, junior center Trey Stanton turned many heads in the team's 77-65 win against Furman University (4-1) Nov. 24, putting up a career high 23 points with nine rebounds.

It's hard trying to live in The Real World

(11/20/09 12:00am)

It has been weeks since that fateful night at the hotel, and I still sit by my phone anxiously awaiting her call, hoping to have another chance, even if just one more night, to talk, to share my soul with her. But without so much as an "I'll call you in a week!" or "I'll be back in a month; see you then!", I know neither how long to wait, nor if the call is coming at all.But don't cry for me. No, this time it isn't a sexy one-night stand whose sequel I (still) await. This time, I have found myself in a situation that I would never, not in a million years, have thought I would stumble upon.

Athletic director Del Conte leaves Rice for TCU

(10/23/09 12:00am)

Chris Del Conte, who has served as Rice's athletic director since June 2006, was introduced as the new athletic director of Texas Christian University Wednesday. President David Leebron has asked David Sayler, fourth year senior executive athletics director, to serve as Interim Director while the university undergoes a nationwide search for Del Conte's replacement.

Listening Post offers cookies, piece of mind

(10/02/09 12:00am)

Upon entering the Rice Memorial Center, students are often tempted with items to be purchased, causes to be supported or boba teas that can accomplish both. But one table stationed at the entrance of the RMC stands out from all the rest, selling no items, advocating no ideology and offering no Listserv to be added to your already flourishing collection. The small table, manned every Wednesday from 1-3 p.m. by 72-year-old Philip Hardy, simply offers the passersby a free plate of cookies, an open seat and a welcoming ear to listen. Its title is as straightforward as they come: The Listening Post.

RUPD forced to cut number of officers

(09/11/09 12:00am)

Last year, each department at Rice was forced to cut its budget by 5 percent. No area was left untouched, and the Rice University Police Department was no exception. However, RUPD was not simply forced to make cuts in both materiel and personnel - it was forced to scrap plans of expansion, made all the more necessary by the fact that Rice now has the largest student population its campus has ever held.

Friday's Sports Update: Oklahoma State defeats soccer 1-0

(09/11/09 12:00am)

The Owls (1-4-1) knew what they were up against with Oklahoma State University (5-2-0) coming into town Friday night. Though the home squad was able to put up quite the battle, the 19th ranked team in the nation narrowly escaped with a 1-0 victory.OSU came out swinging with several scoring chances in the first ten minutes of the game, putting Rice in a defensive role. In the 27th minute, the Owls evaded perhaps the closest near miss of the half when freshman Megan Aultman got beat on the left side of the goalie box. OSU put a strong low cross in for a waiting striker and the ball went sailing into the upper post.

Road trip leaves soccer still scrounging for victory

(09/04/09 12:00am)

Two games, zero goals. Not exactly how the soccer team was expecting to complete its first road trip. It was a scoreless weekend for Rice's offense over the weekend as the team dropped a pair of 1-0 games, first to Marquette University and then to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. But Head Coach Chris Huston believes there was plenty of good that came out of the tough roadtrip.

Rice Football 2009: James Casey takes time to speak with the Thresher about blocking, bonding and his long-awaited television debut

(09/04/09 12:00am)

Ex-Rice football superhero James Casey was drafted in this past year's NFL draft and is currently competing for a spot on the Houston Texans. Sports Editor Yan Digilov spoke with Casey about his NFL experiences. The Rice Thresher: James, now that you have been through OTAs (organized team activities), minicamp and a few preseason matchups, what are some of the biggest adjustments you have noticed that you will have to make in order to be successful in the NFL?

Women draw with Baylor after thunderstorm delay

(08/28/09 12:00am)

As the rain poured down and the lightning illuminated the darkened sky last Friday, the women's soccer team sat, unsure as to whether or not they would be taking the field that night against Baylor University. Two hours later, the teams finally headed onto the pitch, and after a pair of goals and overtime periods, the contest ended in a 1-1 tie. According to senior Erin Scott, the waiting game was almost as difficult as the actual competition.

Rice Soccer 2009

(08/21/09 12:00am)

The injury bug happens to every team eventually. But for the women's soccer team, its presence has become all too infuriatingly commonplace. After graduating only one permanent starter from last year's roster, the 2009 women's soccer team features many familiar faces on the pitch, but if the coming campaign is to be remembered as a success the team will almost certainly have to keep away from the familiar bite of the injury bug.

Casey, Dillard selected in fifth round; Clement waits

(05/15/09 12:00am)

Those familiar with tight end James Casey recognized the congenial, hardworking football player that sat before the Houston press on the afternoon of April 26 at the Houston Texans' facility. But from his description of the previous 24 hours, there was no doubt that a much more fearful and concerned man sat with family glued to the television just moments before.

Spirit squads stepping it up

(05/15/09 12:00am)

Two Bowl trips, a $27 million dollar renovation of the basketball facilities and the signing of one of the winningest basketball coaches in the nation are all just parts of Athletic Director Chris Del Conte's vision for the future of the Rice athletics. Simultaneously, with neither the resources of a full-time staff nor the ability to raise six-figure alumni donations, students leading the Rice spirit squads have been working to move their teams in a direction parallel to Del Conte's vision. The Owls' cheerleading and dance teams have both been through many changes in recent years after making concerted efforts to improve the quality of their performances. Their goal has been to significantly bolster student support on the sidelines.

Complete Works fills Big Room with laughs

(03/27/09 12:00am)

They laughed. They cried. They screamed in horror. At times, audience members watching Sid Richardson College's production of The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged) even considered switching seats to avoid yet another flying projectile, bodily fluid or "human" head. The attempts of director Jacob Lindsey, a Sid junior, along with his small acting troupe of Brown College junior Colin Karlsson and Sid sophomore Graham Johnson, left the actors on stage in the spotlight for the entirety of the show, taking only the occasional break to die or change into a bigger wig. But their energy allowed this absurd rendition to deliver on the promise of its title, providing nonstop laughs as the actors colorfully butcher some of the English language's most cherished works.

Beer Bike restrictions imposed

(03/20/09 12:00am)

As students greet the morning sun to prepare for Beer Bike festivities tomorrow, they will also greet a new Beer Bike policy that has prompted many questions from members of the community. For the first time, colleges will be limited to a single 24-foot flatbed truck to carry balloons into what is unofficially known as the largest water balloon fight in the world. The issue was first brought up in November at a meeting of all Beer Bike coordinators across the university. After the decision to limit the number of trucks was made, its reception was mixed.

Men's basketball moves on in C-USA

(03/13/09 12:00am)

It is never too late to save the best for last. The 10th-seeded men's basketball team played the part of Cinderella at the Conference USA tournament on Wednesday, upsetting fifth-seeded Marshall University 60-59 just one week after losing by 14 to the Thundering Herd (15-17, 7-9 C-USA) in Huntington, W.V. The victory means the Owls (10-21, 4-12 C-USA) will face Tulsa University on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the C-USA tournament, which is held in Memphis, Tenn. Tulsa (10-9, 12-4 C-USA), the second seed, had a first round bye after finishing second in the conference to the University of Memphis.
