The 2008 season was a winding rollercoaster for the soccer team, marked with improbable upsets followed by devastating defeats. On Wednesday, the ride came to an abrupt end in the first round of the Conference USA Championship tournament at the hands of the University of Central Florida. After only 1:37 the Knights caught the tournament hosts off guard with a cross into the box that senior Danielle dos Santos connected on for her sixth goal of the year. Still reeling from the initial strike, the Owls were stunned again in the ninth minute when UCF junior Becca Thomas fired a beamer from 30 yards away that bounced off the top post and landed inside the goal.

This week in California, the Pacific Invitational turned out to be the tournament the golf team was waiting for. The Owls' fall season has been markedly weak despite high hopes after a productive summer and a promising transfer arrived on campus. But on Friday before the team left for California, head coach Drew Scott said he was only waiting for a spark to ignite their fire. "We need to have a good week," he said. "We need to have one good tournament that sparks us. We are on the cusp of breaking through."

On Friday, the soccer team reached their first milestone on the way to attaining their preseason goal of making the NCAA tournament. With a home win over Colorado College, which only competes in Conference USA in women's soccer, Rice clinched a spot in the C-USA Championship tournament. But after a Sunday loss at the University of Texas-El Paso, the Owls remain in fifth place, a point behind Colorado in the standings. Heading into Friday's match up, Colorado was favored to walk away with the victory, but Rice was ready to defend its home turf. The Owls began the game firing on all cylinders with early opportunities from juniors Erin Scott and Shelley Wong.

The soccer team will look to extend a two game winning streak this weekend as they take on Colorado College today and the University of Texas-El Paso on Sunday. Their last two road wins against the University of Central Florida and the University of Southern Mississippi marked the first time in history that the Owls have managed a win-out on a weekend road trip. With a 5-3 record in Conference USA, they are comfortably on pace to make the conference tournament on Nov. 5-9.

Success has been no stranger to head basketball coach Ben Braun in his three decades of coaching college basketball, but his experience with success is not why he was chosen to take over the reigns of a failing Rice Owls basketball squad last spring. Rather, Braun's history of reviving struggling teams throughout the nation brought him to Houston. And for this singular reason, his arrival at Rice University is a welcome sight. Before ever picking up a clipboard, Braun spent time as a young athlete shaping his approach to the game of basketball, learning the importance of hard work and determination at a young age. The eldest of three brothers, he grew up in Chicago, Ill. and attended New Trier High School, where he led teams on both the basketball court and the baseball diamond.

A record setting weekend for both the players on the field and the coach on the sideline has left the soccer team hanging on to second place in the Conference USA standings. With a difficult road trip ahead of them and only three points separating five teams from second place, late game heroics against Southern Methodist University and the University of Tulsa could not have been more timely. The Owls had only beaten SMU one time prior to their meeting on Friday and never at home. An early goal from sophomore midfielder Kate Edwards on a penalty kick given for a foul in the box gave the squad a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute.

It was a first for Owls Soccer, but it's happened elsewhere countless times in the past. In the 13th minute of the Owls' match against Marshall University on Sunday, freshman Chealsey Russell spotted freshman teammate Amy Beger making a run off the right wing. After finding its way directly to the feet of Beger, the ball hit the back of the net to give the Owls a 1-0 advantage. Sunday's game marked Russell's first start after she made her Owl debut only two days prior.

A weekend split left the Owls' position in the Conference USA standings up in the air. They find themselves in a 10-way tie for second place, behind East Carolina University, who beat the Owls 2-0 on Friday at the Rice Track and Soccer Stadium."The thing about conference is that on any given day, anything can happen," senior captain Christine Petric said. "This weekend proved it. This was a game we could have won if we had played our best."

Entering their final weekend before conference play, the soccer team knew they were waging a war against history, but they could not have been prepared for how difficult gaining even a partial victory would turn out to be. Though they were able to fend off McNeese State University, whom they played to an underachieving 2-2 tie last season, and challenge eighth-ranked Texas A&M University, who beat them 6-0 last year, the Owls were unable to complete the sweep.

Escaping before the bad weather could trap them in Houston, the soccer team traveled to Fort Worth on Friday looking to climb up the regional rankings with a win over Texas Christian University. For most of the game, it looked as if the Owls were going to reach that goal, but two late scores by the Horned Frogs proved to be Rice's undoing. The first half of the match was a dead heat. TCU outshot the Owls 6-4 as both teams fought for the upper hand. However, it was Rice that first connected with a goal. As Junior forward Erin Scott registered her second score of the year after a deflection from the Frogs' goalkeeper rolled directly in front of her.

I wish I were surprised. I wish that on Saturday, Rice's improbable comeback, topped off with an incredible last-second interception from freshman cornerback Chris Jammer, was not the only unbelievable event of the night.In nearly any other city in the country the incident that I witnessed in a nearby sports bar would have been unthinkable, but in this city of millions, it pains me to say that I expect nothing more. From here on, I'll refer to it as the Rice Village Massacre.

The women's soccer team finished its weekend trip to Oklahoma with a split decision last weekend, falling to Oklahoma State 4-0 on Friday before defeating the University of Oklahoma 1-0 on Sunday. Heading into the weekend, the Owls had placed a larger target on the backs of 17th-ranked OSU.

For most Rice students, powderpuff is a unifying display of college dominance and pride, but for female varsity athletes, choosing to play is a decision that has consequences far beyond representing one's college. The game's worst kept secret asks Division-I athletes to choose between participating without the approval of their coaches or missing the chance to take part in one of the most popular aspects of college life. Without knowing how deceptive the title "powderpuff" is at Rice, many freshman athletes join the squad with good intentions.

A fractured team without a home: this is an image of the 2007 soccer team that the Owls are trying to put behind them. On the field the first steps towards redemption came with a filled depth chart, and off the field, the Owls have found a new home after Autry construction stripped the team of a locker room in 2007. "In order to improve the future of Rice and other sports, it's one of the sacrifices that needed to be made," senior captain Christine Petric said. As the season began, the team found that the sacrifice, while seemingly inconsequential for on-field performance, was taking a toll on the team.

Two seasons of falling short of an NCAA tournament berth and months of intensive off-season training culminated in an exciting opening weekend for the soccer team. With convincing wins against Sam Houston State University and University of Texas- San Antonio last weekend, the squad sent a message to the district and the nation. "Any time you get two home openers, you are hoping to start with a 2-0 record," head coach Chris Huston said. "The girls did fantastic."

The Rice University campus is abuzz as the football team prepares for its home opener against Southern Methodist University on Aug. 29. After a disappointing 3-9 season, all indicators suggest that the Owls will be stronger as long as the team can avoid last year's cascade of injuries.A large crowd is expected for the nationally televised rematch of last year's shootout. The 43-42 win in 2007 featured a striking but telling juxtaposition of the team's explosive offense and its struggling defense.

For the past two years, the Owls have been knocking on the door of the NCAA tournament, and after a slight decline in 2007, the squad is hoping that the third time is the charm.While sheer misfortune led to a series of injuries and upsets last year, the players know that they cannot rely upon luck to carry them to success. They each went through a vigorous workout schedule over the summer to enhance their fitness levels and prepare themselves for a run at a conference championship and NCAA tournament berth.

For the golf team, the Conference USA Championships are turning out to be a tough nut to crack. For the second year in a row, the Owls rounded out the bottom of the pack at the C-USA Championship, finishing 11th out of as many teams in Texarkana, Arkansas on April 20-22. Impressive performances from freshman Michael Whitehead and junior Kyle Kelley were not enough to keep the team from sliding into the 11th spot, but Rice's young stars left room for a promise of a brighter future alongside their room for improvement.The Owls needed a first place finish to extend their postseason, but after a tumultuous regular season in which they cracked the top 10 four times, they would have been satisfied with at least a solid effort. In addition, Rice finished ahead of C-USA rivals Tulsa and University of Houston at the River Landing Intercollegiate the week prior to the conference tournament, so coach Drew Scott and his team were optimistic.

A record crowd of 5,368 spectators filled Reckling Park on Saturday to witness a Super Regional rematch between Rice and Texas A&M University. The Aggies could not prevent history from repeating itself as senior designated hitter Jordan Dodson again played the hero in the Owls' 9-7 win. Mimicking last year's performance, Dodson had the crowd seeing déj? vu as he broke a tie to pull the Owls ahead in game one. On the day, he had four RBIs spread across three hits, an impressive feat considering he entered the game batting .167. He raised his batting average by nearly 30 points by the end of the game.

The golf team competed in the River Landing Intercollegiate tournament this weekend, hosted by North Carolina State University in Wallace, N.C. The team finished 11th out of a 15-team field.Sophomore Chris Brown finished the first round tied for ninth with a 71, but shot a 75 and 76 in the next two rounds to drop down in the rankings. Junior Kyle Kelley, also had an impressive round of 71 on the final day, but neither he nor the rest of the team could record three quality rounds of golf.
