SA Academics Committee projects near completion

During the course of the school year, the Student Association Academics Committee has been working on projects targeting aspects of student academic life, including a transfer student courses database of previously approved courses, the creation of more minors, improving publicity and resources of pre-professional advising resources, revamping the Esther course evaluation system and creating a Syllabi Archive available during registration. The Academics Committee was also involved in communications with IT regarding the move from Rice E-mail to Gmail.

Japanese int'l study on indefinite hiatus

Rice suspended student participation in study-abroad and exchange programs in Japan until further notice, Assistant Dean for Student Judicial Programs Donald Ostdiek announced. This decision affects the summer plans of three students who signed up for Japanese programs administered by Rice International Programs.

Hoot ready to expand into South next year

Rice students from the South Colleges can rejoice! No longer will the long walk during Houston's humid nights be necessary for Chick-fil-A sandwiches or Papa John's pizza. Starting in Fall 2011, the Hoot will open a new location at South Servery.

Jump start for solar car team

Eighty thousand dollars. That's how much the new Rice Solar Car Team estimates they will spend in their efforts to build an energy-efficient solar car that can sufficiently compete in a race against solar cars from other universities, which have multi-million dollar budgets. They will compete for the first time in Spring 2012 in the Shell Eco-Marathon.

RMC convenience store to open next fall

The Rice Memorial Center will replace 13th Street and Smoothie King with a convenience store during the summer, former Student Association President Selim Sheikh announced in Monday's SA meeting.

Student to bike miles for charity

Talk about having a strong wheelpower. This summer, Baker College junior Matthew Nanes is embarking on a bike ride from Providence, R.I. to Seattle, Wash. to raise money and awareness for affordable housing.

Students help RUPD catch serial bike thief

Rice University Police Sergeants Gary Spears and Clemente Rodriguez apprehended William Baisden Wednesday for breaking a trespass warning for Rice campus and on suspicion of stealing four bicycles in the past two to three days, according to Spears.

Envision Grants fund student ideas

Leadership Rice's Envision Grants are awarded to students with ideas that benefit a community and facilitate leadership among Rice students. According to Leadership Rice Director Judy Le, this year's Envision grants fund four projects create a long lasting framework for leadership among students at Rice.
