Vaping draws admin concern

Amid the ongoing investigation by the Center for Disease Control into the outbreak of lung disease and its ties to vaping, Dean of Undergraduates Bridget Gorman sent an email to the magisters directing them to pass on information warning students of the possible health risks of electronic cigarette use.

Rice falls to No. 17 in 2020 US News rankings

Rice dropped a place in the recently released 2020 U.S. News & World Report National Universities rankings, tying with Cornell University at No. 17. Last year, Rice was tied with Cornell at No. 16 and the previous year Rice was in a four-way tie for No. 14.

Leebron shares slavery task force progress at Senate

The Hoot adjusts menu, expands hours

The Hoot has undergone two major changes this semester, expanding their operating hours to Fridays and Saturdays and adding a chicken sandwich from Smashburger to their menu. The addition came after The Hoot announced last semester that they would be discontinuing the sale of menu items from Chick-fil-A.

New Hanszen College dorm will begin construction in 2021

Construction of a new five-story Hanszen College dormitory made out of mass timber will begin in 2021, according to Mark Ditman, the associate vice president of Housing and Dining, and Anzie Gilmore, the assistant director for project management and engineering.

Faculty, students reflect on El Paso, Dayton and Midland-Odessa shootings

Exactly one month after the mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, Ohio, and three days after the shooting in the Midland-Odessa community in West Texas, members of the Rice community met in the Grand Hall of the Rice Memorial Center for a panel discussion and vigil in an event called “Reflections on El Paso: A Time for Unity.”

Tetra increases to $100

On-campus meal plans will now provide students with $100 in Tetra per semester rather than $50. According to David McDonald, senior business director for Housing and Dining, the additional Tetra will be allocated to students with meal plan A, B or C.

New alcohol education module replaces BASICS

New students were required to complete a new alcohol education module, AlcoholEdu, instead of the Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students, which had been used for over ten years, according to emails from the Wellbeing and Counseling Center.

Title IX office relocates, begins to offer forensic exams

The SAFE Office, formerly the Office of Sexual Violence Prevention and Title IX Support, moved to a new location next to Student Health Services this semester and now offers on-campus forensic examinations for students who have been sexually or physically assaulted, according to Deputy Title IX Coordinator Allison Vogt and Director of the SAFE Office Cathryn Councill.

Parking spots sacrificed for New Sid

Residents of the South colleges are scrambling to find parking on campus after the sale of permits for South Colleges Residents Lot was suspended, following the decision to sacrifice more parking spots for the new Sid Richardson College project. Only 45 student permits will be offered for the 2019-20 year, while 150 permits were sold for last academic year, according to parking manager Mike Morgan.
