Volleyball splits weekend games

The Rice University women’s volleyball team (11-5) won one game and lost another this past weekend. The Owls gained a 3-0 victory against the University of Southern Mississippi while in Hattiesburg, Mississippi on Friday Sept. 26. After the shutout victory, the team traveled to Bowling Green, Kentucky, only to fall 3-2 in a close match against Western Kentucky University.

Rice comeback falls just short against Old Dominion

The Rice University football team fell short in their comeback attempt against Old Dominion University in front of 17,588 spectators on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Rice Stadium. Despite making a 21-point comeback culminating in a game-tying touchdown with just over a minute remaining, the Rice football team could not overcome the Monarchs.

Soccer defeats Air Force Academy

This past weekend, the Rice University soccer team hosted and defeated the Air Force Academy Falcons for the first time in school history. In the 21st minute of the match, Air Force struck a crossed-in ball past Rice goalkeeper Amy Czyz to take a 1-0 lead. Just two minutes later, the Falcons added a second goal, giving them a 2-0 cushion early in the game. In the 30th minute, Rice sophomore Jenny Fichera fired a shot and found the top of the net, just avoiding the diving hand of the Air Force goalkeeper, making the halftime score 2-1 in favor of Air Force.

Soccer draws against Arkansas

The Rice University soccer team traveled this past weekend to Fayetteville, Ark. to face the University of Arkansas Razorbacks. This matchup marked the final road game for the Owls before the start of Conference USA play.

Tennis plays in Midlands Tournament

As the rain poured down at the Midlands Racquet Club, the Rice University men’s tennis team played in their first tournament of the fall season, which did not count toward the team’s overall record. Team play will begin in the spring semester.

Rice football prepares for conference opener

After consecutive losses to currently top-10 ranked teams, the Rice University football team (0-2) returns home this weekend to face off against new conference foe Old Dominion University. After facing the University of Notre Dame’s fourth-ranked scoring defense and Texas A&M University’s fourth-ranked scoring offense, the Owls look to earn their first win of the season against a Monarchs team that is playing its first full season in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the highest division of collegiate football.

Despite out-gaining their opponent in yards 481 to 477, the Rice University football team (0-2) could not overcome the Associated Press No. 7 Texas A&M University Aggies (3-0), losing 38-10.

Football prepares for A&M

As Rice University students begin to make plans for a day trip to College Station, the Rice football team is taking advantage of their bye week to prepare for an in-state showdown. The game against the Associated Press no. 7-ranked Texas A&M University Aggies is on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 8 p.m. After the 48-17 loss at Notre Dame, the Owls are returning to the field against another high-profile opponent.

Soccer defeats Vanderbilt

The Rice University soccer team returned home to Holloway Field after winning back-to-back games on the road last week. On Friday, Sept. 5, the Owls played their second straight Southeastern Conference opponent, the Vanderbilt University Commodores. Rice shocked Vanderbilt by tying the game in the 90th minute of play and then won the game in the first minute of overtime with a header off a corner, resulting in a final score of 2-1.

Lads assemble new team

The Rice University men’s club soccer team, commonly known as the Lads, recently assembled their 2014-15 team. More than forty aspiring Lads tried out for the team last Monday through Wednesday, and returning upperclassmen chose eight to join the team.

The Rice University women’s soccer team went on the road this past weekend to play two non-conference matches against Lamar University and Louisiana State University. The Owls secured their first win of the season against Lamar and followed up with a second win by defeating the LSU Tigers. The Owls improved to 2-1-1 on the season.

Volleyball wins two at opener

Rice University women’s volleyball hosted their annual season opener, the Rice Invitational, this past weekend. On Friday, Rice swept University of California, Davis. They then suffered a close 3-2 loss to Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday, followed by a final game between Rice and Fresno State in which Rice achieved a 3-0 victory. Next weekend, Rice heads to the North Carolina State tournament where they will face North Carolina State, Connecticut and Toledo in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Veteran Owl soccer team battles in early games

The Rice University women’s soccer team kicked off their 2014 season with two overtime matches this past week. The 2014 team has many key returning players including senior goalkeeper Amy Czyz and juniors Holly Hargreaves and Lauren Hughes, who led last year’s team in scoring with nine goals each. Other returning players for the Owls are midfielders senior Quinny Truong and junior Danielle Spriggs.

This summer, Autry Court in Tudor Fieldhouse received a $17,000 makeover. The court received a special redesign that was created with a stain, which lasts longer than the original paint.

Football prepares for Notre Dame

When the Rice University football team takes the field against the 17th-ranked University of Notre Dame this Saturday, Aug. 30, they will be the defending conference champions for the first time since 1956. Following their third ten-win season in school history, the Owls will strive for their third consecutive bowl game and try to repeat as conference champions, something that has never been achieved in school history.

Men’s tennis finishes regular season

The Rice University men’s tennis team traveled to Tulsa, Okla. this weekend for the Conference USA Men’s Tennis Championship. The fifth-seeded Owls defeated fourth-seed Middle Tennessee State University 4-1 in the first round before falling to top-seeded University of Tulsa 4-0 in the semifinals.

Kuster signs WNBA contract

Jessica Kuster, the leading rebounder and scorer in Rice University women’s basketball history, signed a contract with the WNBA’s San Antonio Stars on Monday, April 21. Despite not being drafted in the three rounds of the WNBA Draft, Kuster was able to sign a contract with her hometown team.
