Houston a perfect fit for Rice experience

Rice would not be the same if it were located anywhere else but Houston. And Rice would not be able to take such great advantage of big-city Houston were it not for its forested, small campus feel.Houston is a dynamic city, although it can be overwhelming. Houston's distinct neighborhoods, from Midtown to Montrose, and a variety of events and things to do and see, such as the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, could keep students busy 24/7. As the biggest city in Texas and the fourth largest in the United States, Houston boasts an impressive array of shopping, dining and cultural fare that can satisfy any urbanite. The only city to surpass the number of Fortune 500 companies headquartered here is New York City. And although Houston does not have a mass transit subway system like New York City does, its METRO light rail and bus system run throughout Houston, with stops conveniently located all around Rice.

Owl Days to host prospies

Prospective Owls will flock to campus on April 15-16 for Owl Days. At least 600 prospective students - up from 450 last year - and their parents will arrive on the Rice campus to experience a taste of what they can look forward to for the next four years if they accept Rice's offer of admission. Student Admission Council Event Volunteer Recruitment Chair Wharton Wang said events held Thursday - such as a Club and Activities Fair, workshops about studying abroad in college, academic panels, facility tours and college mixers - will be geared toward prospective students. The Rice Philharmonics and Rice's improv comedy troupe, Spontaneous Combustion, will also be performing.

Time, schedule management necessary for increased sleep

A social life, good grades or sleep: The joke is that in college, you can only pick two out of three, or you'd exhaust yourself trying to achieve it all. To a college student, sleep is one of the most precious commodities and at times, a temporarily unnecessary luxury.One of the most important things to learn in college is how to manage time effectively. There are so many opportunities that are thrust your way: research opportunities, internships, athletics, being a part of the dozens of clubs on campus or just making the most of the classes you take at Rice with faculty who are at the top of their field. If you are one of those people who want to do it all, you need to know how much you can take on and to what capacity. But in the midst of all your efforts, you need to find time to sleep.

Transfers require open mind, initiative

Transitions are never easy, especially transitioning mid-year into a completely unfamiliar environment and leaving behind everything you know. This is what I went through last month when I transferred to Rice.I knew, being a mid-year transfer, that I was coming into an unfamiliar territory where social groups were already sorted out, the general university procedures understood. In addition to adjusting to a new academic structure, I imagined feeling increased academic pressure as I worked to secure transfer credits.
