Anwuli Chukwumah chases indigo

Anwuli Chukwumah says her creative process is like scratching an itch. A double major in studio art and architecture, the Martel College senior creates with a wide variety of materials, including found objects, ceramics and drawings, often tied together by a distinctive shade of indigo blue.

Musical apocalypse hits Rice

Music, screaming and laughs filled McMurtry College commons Feb. 27 to March 1, as Lovett Theatre and McMurtry Arts Committee brought to life the horror-comedy-musical: “The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals.”

Rice Zine Fest creates collages

Calming beats, the chatter of conversation and the smell of oranges hung in the air the evening of Sunday, Feb. 23, in Lovett College’s basement, dubbed ‘Lyle’s’. Magazines, scrapbook paper, art books and stickers were spread across a few tables, along with mandarin oranges. Throughout the night, students made collages and zines, noncommercial or homemade magazines, with supplies provided by Zine Fest organizers at Rice Zine Fest’s first event.

Spring Archi Market blooms

Candy hearts, pastel crafts and the hum of excited chatter transformed Anderson Hall into a makeshift bazaar Feb. 10 for the 12th iteration of Archi Market, a student-run market where vendors sold items: hand-beaded jewelry to homemade iced coffee in celebration of Valentine’s Day.

Fall Chamber Music Festival shines

Serenades and sonatas rang through the hall as the Shepherd School of Music hosted its annual Fall Chamber Music Festival this past weekend. Students took the stage in small groups, performing on clarinet, piano and more.

Students explore activism and solidarity through art

While some college students use their voices to protest and call for social change, others opt for a different medium of expression, through painting, sculpture or photography. Some Rice students say activism through art has proven to be a fulfilling avenue of expressing dissent that resounds just as loudly as their voices.
