Egyptian students visit

A group of Egyptian students from the American University in Cairo's Center for American Studies and Research visited Rice last week with the goal of building social, cultural and political links between the United States and the Middle East. The Public Diplomacy and Global Policymaking program at the Baker Institute arranged the visit in conjunction with 10 Rice students who visited Cairo last summer: Sean Graham (Baker '10), Lovett College senior Thomas Campbell, Sid Richardson College junior Graham West, Shamoor Anis (Sid '10), Michael Feldman (Sid '10), Wiess College senior Robin Richards, McMurtry College sophomore Anastazija Ristovska, Jones College junior Marc Sabbagh, McMurtry senior David Sorge and Susan Wu (Jones '10).

Duncan begins search for RAs, HRF

After passing the milestone of choosing its first masters, Duncan College is now on the search for resident associates and a head resident fellow. Duncan's RA and HRF search committees are composed of both Duncan freshmen and transfers and are facilitated by Duncan's current HRFs and future masters, Luis Duno-Gottberg and Marnie Hylton. Students who were interested in being part of the search committee turned in applications, from which Duno-Gottberg selected the final committee members. While there is one committee for both the RA and the HRF search, each part is headed by a different student.

Closure of colleges saving green

In keeping with its recent efforts to go green, the university has also attempted to stay in the black. The university decided to close the residential colleges over winter break with the hopes of reducing its carbon footprint with the aim of saving an estimated $100,000 in utility bills. Although Housing and Dining is in the process of computing more accurate data and numbers, it is clear that the university saved at least $35,000 by closing the colleges, Housing Operations Manager Mark Chaszar said. This figure is a preliminary number, but is expected to be much higher once all the calculations are complete.

Pool of prospects expands

With the passing of the Nov. 1 deadline for early decision this year, it has become clear that the number of applicants is once again increasing. Although regular decision applications are not due until Jan. 2, 2010, Vice President for Enrollment Chris Muñoz estimated that applicant numbers will increase by 21 to 24 percent this year.

Second round of transfers begins

With the transfer process moving at full speed, McMurtry College and Duncan College are one step closer to obtaining an upperclassman population. As of last Friday, which was the transfer deadline for the first round of invited students, both new colleges received a total of 130 new members. McMurtry received 68 acceptances and Duncan received 62.

RPC announces concerts

In celebration of Homecoming Weekend in two weeks, the Rice Program Council announced that students will again be able to attend a live concert, featuring Augustana and The Wild Moccasins, in the Central Quad. The free event, which will be held Saturday, Nov. 14, from 7:30-11 p.m., is organized by the RPC.The Wild Moccasins, who will open at 7:30 p.m., are an indie rock band from Houston with a large local following, RPC President Michelle Kerkstra said. In the past, The Wild Moccasins have played at events like the Westheimer Block Party and at Walter's on Washington, a local music venue in The Heights. They will be followed by the nationally acclaimed rock band Augustana at 9 p.m.

Construction causes cable outages

Duncan College and McMurtry College are not the only colleges which have faced construction troubles this semester. In the past two weeks, the south colleges have encountered issues that include cable and electricity outages and noise and water problems. According to both Project Manager Larry Vossler and Manager of Communications for Facilities Engineering and Planning Susann Glenn, Sid Richardson College and Lovett College have suffered the brunt of the construction discomforts, as they are located near the Baker College and Will Rice College renovations. On the other end of the south campus, both Wiess College and Hanszen College have also run across issues from construction.
