Online only: Swim team earns third-place finish at C-USA Championships, Huston wins Coach of the Year Honors

Some say the best way to improve at a sport is to focus on the positive and forget the negative. The swim team looked to do just that and forget missteps from their regular season while concentrating on earning a top finish in the Conference USA Championship Feb. 26-27. The team has come to expect nothing less than a third-place finish, as they have placed in the top three at the conference championship for the past three years. The swim team started out strong in the C-USA championships, looking for its third second-place finish in the last four years in a close battle with East Carolina University. However, the team ended up falling short in the final day of the competition, as they finished third behind champion Southern Methodist University and runner-up ECU. The University of Houston, Tulane University and Marshall University also competed in the conference championship and finished fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively.

Swimming nabs two out of three

Still looking for their first win of the year, the swim team went to the University of Houston last weekend to face conference rival Tulane University, No. 24 Louisiana State University and Houston in a two-day meet. Rice (3-4), which had lost to Houston in October, prevailed under pressure to pull off two victories against Tulane (236.5-96.5) and the Cougars (197-144).Though the wins were tempered by a loss to LSU (119-236), the two victories came at the right time for the team to carry over momentum into the conference championship later this month.

Swimming lurches out of gate

Although the swim team closed out 2009 with a win at the Delta State Holiday Invitational, the team could not carry over its winning ways into the new decade. Rice (3-4) dropped its first two meets of the season over the past week, falling to No. 18 Southern Methodist University and the University of North Texas.Last Friday, the Owls traveled to Dallas to take on conference rival SMU (3-3) in their first Conference USA dual meet of the season. The Mustangs are a perennial national power, having dominated C-USA for years, so it was not altogether surprising that they bested the Owls 129-89.

Swimming opens new pool with convincing victories

The setting could not have been more perfect. From the beautiful weather gracing the Rice campus this past weekend, to the Barbara and David Gibbs Recreation Center adorned with an array of balloons, to the fans on their feet in the bleachers surrounding the Rice Aquatic Center cheering on the Owls, the swim team's first meet in their new pool was all it could have asked for. This past weekend was not only the season home opener for the swim team, but also foreshadowed the first of many meets to come to the new Olympic-sized pool.Head Coach Seth Huston said the team came in ready to give the fans a show.

Swimming takes sixth place at SMU Classic

After opening the season with a victory on the first day of competition and a loss on the second at the Phill Hansel Duals on Oct. 9-10 and then placing sixth at the SMU Classic, the swim team feels it has a strong basis on which to build for the rest of the season. Rice Swimming 2009

The new competition pool which the swim team will use at the Barbara and David Gibbs Recreation Center may be the most obvious change for this year's swim team, but it certainly won't be the only one. With 60 percent of the team comprised of freshmen and sophomores, and only three seniors on the team, the Owls will likely be one of the youngest squads in Conference USA. The turnover will arguably be the most interesting aspect of the team's competitions this season, as last season Rice had one of their most successful runs in recent history, placing third in C-USA and setting school records in the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay. After the graduation of seven seniors and the loss of non-seniors Caitlin Warner, Carlyann Miller, and Skylar Craig from the team, Rice faces a challenge to repeat last season's multiple successes.
