Two new potential minors proposed to Faculty Senate

Aside from the newly approved Jewish studies minor, Speaker of the Faculty Senate Deborah Harter said the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee will soon vote on two potential minors - energy and water sustainability and poverty, justice, and human capabilities. These could join sociology, global health, business and financial modeling in Rice's expanding portfolio of minors.The Faculty Senate's approval of a new Jewish studies minor program last week may inspire students to introduce more interdisciplinary and departmental minors into their studies.

Online-only special: Presidential inauguration brings students together

Lines for apple pie and coffee stood still in the Rice Memorial Center's Grand Hall on Tuesday morning as the 150 to 200 students attending the Inaugural Viewing Party paused to watch Barack Obama sworn in as the 44th president of the United States of America during a live television broadcast of the presidential inauguration ceremony in Washington, D.C. Time stood still for many who felt as if they were not just viewing a routine process of democracy but a historic moment in American history.The inauguration ceremony took place before a record-breaking audience of more than a million people who crowded the streets of Washington and on the same Mall where civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. delivered a speech during the 1963 March on Washington.

Applications for 2013 class surpass 10,000, breaks record

Exceeding last year's count of over 9,700 applicants, Rice University broke records again, attracting more than 10,000 applications this year for the first time in its history. For the class of 2013, Rice received 720 applications for Early Decision, compared to 661 applications in 2007 and 517 applications in 2006. Of the 720 applications, Rice accepted about 200 students.

Financial committee looks at proposed accounting changes

In preparation for the upcoming administrative changes for club financing, the Student Association created a Club Finance Committee on Oct. 26 to serve as a liaison between club treasurers and the university administration. The committee is responsible for representing student club interests when working with Vice President for Finance Kathy Collins and Dean of Undergraduates Robin Forman in regard to club accounting policies and finances. The committee will also work closely with the Graduate Student Association.

SA poll shows Health Services has limited reach

When they are feeling under the weather, 42 percent of Rice students said they would contact their parents prior to seeking treatment from health services or using online resources like WebMD, according to the Student Health Services survey conducted by the Student Association last month. SA Senators Ryan Fleming and Leticia Camara collaborated on the poll in order to address concerns about student awareness and utilization of Rice's Student Health Services, and to identify areas of possible improvement.

Yakobson receives Nano 50 award for work with nanotubes

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Professor Boris Yakobson received a Nano 50 award Nov. 13 from science publication Nanotech Briefs for his advances in nanotechnology. The Nano 50 awards, now in their fourth year, recognize the top 50 technologies, products and innovators who have considerably influenced the latest advancement in nanotechnology. Yakobson received the Nano 50 award in the Innovators category for his work with nanotubes.

Esperanza gets record turnout

Once infamous for its low turnout and unpopular venues, this year's Esperanza attracted an unprecedented 1,000 students, the highest number the Rice Program Council has seen in recent years. The formal, this year hosted on campus in a tent between the Jesse H. Jones School of Management, the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy and the Shepherd School of Music, sold out last Thursday, two days before the event last Saturday. While last year saw an increased turnout of 550 students for Esperanza, this year's turnout almost doubled. RPC Formals Committee co-Chair Maggy Taylor said she was surprised and pleased by the turnout.
